Last week, while we were reviewing the Xbox One launch line-up, something odd happened. Some achievements popped for one game while we were playing another.
After a short investigation, it turned out that we had earned the achievements in an earlier session, and they were just late to pop. We wrote it off as a quirk of pre-release software and moved on. It never happened again.
Now, however, it seems we may have a better explanation. According to a Microsoft help page, Xbox One achievements don’t unlock while you’re playing offline.
“For achievements and challenges to get unlocked and for rewards to be issued, you must have an active connection to Xbox Live,” explains the post.
“Though you may be able to meet the requirements for an achievement or challenge while offline, you will not receive related notices or rewards until you connect to Xbox Live.”
While we hadn’t manually disconnected our internet connection, it must have dropped offline for a while, meaning that the achievements only popped when the console reconnected.
Presumably a hangover from the console’s previously always-online nature, the set-up may or may not change in the future, but either way if your achievements don’t immediately pop, don’t panic. Your connection may just have temporarily dropped.
