Forums - Microsoft - No Dolby 5.1 Support On Xbox One Optical Port

Another distorted news. Unbelievable why people do this. All liars.

XBOX ONE does support Dolby Digital through its Optical and HDMI ports, both compressed and uncompressed audio.

Do people not realize that buying at launch just makes you a beta tester? Not everything is there, by the same time next year there will have been at least 5 updates each on both consoles.

So ... am I fine to get 5.1 sound on my soundsystem and this is just for headsets?

this is for sound systems, headsets can be hooked up via USB.

USB does not give true surround sound. You gt virtual surround sound.

Many might not care but I know audiophiles would.

true, but he asked if this affect only headsets, its the other way.

Ah, gotcha. Of the headsets out there this really only affects the surround sound headsets that use the optical input.

The funny thing about that is that the XBox One actually has a "surround sound beta" option.

Well, that's kind of crappy. Could it have something to do with them wanting 5.1 on the HDMI in as well?

That states nothing about it supporting Dolby Digital.

What Sony and Microsoft have learned from the launch machines will mean improved more reliable models will be available in a couple of months and the system software would have got to a more decent state. With no backwards compatibility and few must have games I just don't see the point of jumping on board yet.

Also these consoles are sufficiently powerful to have been backwards compatible with the earlier console designs. The xbox one could easily run original xbox games via software emulation and the ps4 could do both ps1 and ps2 plus done decent upscaling of those format games too.

They both seem incredibly limited at the moment.

Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital 5.1 are entirely different things.

Your links do not discredit anything. The first says it supports 5.1 surround, which is does, if it's DTS. They DO NOT specifiy DD 5.1 and/or 7.1 at all.

Your second link is about HDMI. We already know it supports Dolby Digital 5.1 through HDMI.

Even the Astro website has this to say about their surround sound headsets. Notice one says Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 and the other only says Dolby Digital? Dolby Digital is stereo, not surround.

Edit - They actually don't even mention XBOX One on their website, only the PS4. For the XBox One they issued this statement back in October. This is where it is mentioned that it supports ONLY Dolby Digital, with zero mention of Dolby Digital 5.1 and/or 7.1. They actually say more than they need to in order to convince everyone that there is indeed an issue.

Sounds like they are either in the works on making DTS compatible headsets and/or MS is working on correcting the issue as there is obviously an issue here.

Xbox One: Game Audio for the Xbox One will function as normal, through the optical output – meaning all our c urrent products will deliver full Dolby ® Digital GAME AUDIO on the XBOX One.  However, the chat connector on the controller is now a proprietary connector, meaning that our current products will require an adapter to connect to the controller for Xbox Live voice chat.  Fortunately, until this chat adapter is available, the built-in Kinect microphone will provide full voice communication access to Xbox Live while using ASTRO headsets on the Xbox One.

Regarding new Xbox One products in our pipeline, we are an officially licensed Xbox One partner, but we are not allowed to comment on the specifics of any products we have under development. Rest assured, none of our current products will be made obsolete by anything going on in the Xbox One ecosystem.

PS4 COMPATIBILITY

PS4:  We can say with 100% certainty that our headsets will deliver Dolby ® Digital GAME AUDIO on the PS4, just like they do for the PS3.  Our headsets will also deliver full voice chat functionality over the PlayStation Network upon Sony’s release of a post-launch PS4 firmware update.

Website now says:

Zero mention of XBox One.
