Forums - Gaming - PS4 and XBONE are in for the same drought as WiiU

There will be plenty of downloadable games on both the PS4 and Xbox One, also they will have plenty of third party support so there will be plenty of games for people to play...

There has been many great downloadable games on Wii U too in the month after launch and some good third party games (Lego City, Monster Hunter, Need for Speed, The Cave, Injustice etc. etc.). The PS4/Xbox One has the third partys, the Wii U has the first party games.

Doesnt have 3rd parties that interest gamers though.

I meant games developed for Wii U originally.

If thats how your going play it then how do you figure the gen of a multiplat like black ops as the PS3, xbox and wii u got the same thing? What gen something is is totally to do with the tech. Anything else is just guess work. Im happy to say that so far there hasnt been a single 8th gen game on the wii u, but thatll change when they bring out mario karts. Mario 3d just looks like a standard run around platformer from this gen.

So 8th gen is a standard arbitrarily determined by you. Good to know.

Tech is quantifiable, whereas yours ain't and is just guess work by you to big up old tech. There was an epic thread on eurogamer where it was clearly spelt out what a next gen console is - a game console that can play next gen games.

If you just say "its the next one so its next gen" then why isn't my microwave a next gen console? Your argument cant hold up to even the most basic scrutiny.

Because your Microwave isn't a game console.

Noooo waaayy, really?

Why isn't it? Thats what im saying, how you say it isnt a console will show you that theres more to a console than "it was released as the next one".

No, there isn't. If it's a console released during the "eighth generation" of video game development, it is an eighth generation video game console. If there was some microwave out there that had the ability to play video games, it would be an eighth generation console as well.

That's all the term "next generation" means. It's released during the next generation. If you want to create a classification based on power, by all means, do so. However, the term next gen simply refers to when a console was released. Generation is simply a term describing time.

Saying that the Wii U isn't eighth gen because it isn't as powerful is like refusing to acknowledge a person as part of a certain generation simply because they're not as strong as the average person born alongside them.

Lol buddy then how was the xbox a game console as it was the new kid on the market? Real watertight argument. And how are you saying a period is the 8th gen? Does some magic bell in a far off land chime in a new game generation?

The X-Box was released during the sixth generation of video game development, was it not? There's your answer.

Now, in regards to the rest of your post, let me ask you a question in return. When does a generation of people begin and end? Classify that for me, if you would.

The term "generation" is not a concrete one. There's no specifically defined starting point or ending point. But the simple fact that it's difficult to determine where it begins and where it ends doesn't change the definition of the word.

It's the same story with video games. I suppose if you wanted to define it by the games it played, then you could define a console as one that is designed for eighth generation games. But it's difficult to define when a generation of games moves from one generation to the next as well. In any scenario you present, it's virtually impossible to create any sort of concrete definition for when one "era" of video games ends and another begins.

The definition of generation (regardinghumans), from Merriam Webster's dictionary, is as follows:

all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively.

Notice the "about" in the definition. If we apply that to video games, we get "all of the consoles created and running at about the same time." That's as concrete a definition as you'll get for the term generation.

What I find most interesting about your complaints, though, is that even though you accuse me of not having a concerete definition, defining a console by hardware specs is even more vague. What exactly is the limit of power required to be a supposed "next gen" console? Who is responsible for determining it? Does a panel of video game analysists congregate and decide what qualifies as next gen or not? Please, by all means, since you have such a firm understanding of this concept, enlighten us. What is the technical, waterproof definition of a "next gen" console?

MTZehor just kicked ass... if only he'd remembered to declare "objection" first.

Here is a good description of all the consoles in each generation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console#First_generation

So according to this ps4 guy only one console can be next gen. The most powerful one, anything else is too weak. Right?

true.
but people buy and play these few games on ps4/x1, but wii U owners simplily didnt.

And how did we all know it was the 6th gen? Why was that hybrid Jap ps2 thing not next gen? It wasnt the ps2 was it?

People are biology not tech so its a dud idea. As the xbox came out of the fuckin ether of the US of A, why are you talking about generations in people?

Its easy how gens work just look at game engines. Follow unreal engine for example, that started on PS1 and is still with us today. Everytime it evolved, bam, new game engine. Now we can look at cryengine as well and others to show us when next gen consoles come out as they are consoles able to run those games. How can something be next-gen but cant play next-gen games?!?!?!?!?!?

As the industry standard seems to be 30fps and the resolution changes each gen, tech aint vague, its just benchmarks. So in this case, a next gen console is one that can play next gen engines at 1080p(can be scaled) at a minimum of 30fps, with next gen engines being ones that have volumetric lighting. Snap. Better than your definition as its not flakey.
