Forums - Gaming - PS4 and XBONE are in for the same drought as WiiU

Do you have any idea how few games most launches come with?  There had never been a launch with that many games released for the system at launch as that.  The games were also on average better rated than most of the other consoles launch games.  The games wasn't the problem.  Never was...  Exactly how many games are you expecting at a consoles launch?  That simply wasn't the issue.

I think the Wii had 17 games and most if not all of them were crapware.  Things like Wii Party and Warioware were the system sellers.  PS3 had 14 launch games and only a couple stood out among  them.  360 had 21.  Most of their games were also multiplatform. Look at exclusives that number changes to the low end of the single digits.

To include download-only games would be to concede that the Wii U did not suffer from a release drought, a ludicrous assertion. For the purposes of this thread, we are not including download-only titles.

It is unusual to have zero retail releases throughout January and February. This past year, the PS3 saw the releases of Ni No Kuni, DmC, and Metal Gear Rising in that time (off the top of my head). The 360 got the latter two of those as well. The 3DS got Fire Emblem: Awakening and Etrian Odyssey IV. If both the PS4 and XO have a complete absence of planned retail releases in those months, I think it's worth pointing out, regardless of their digital lineups.

Did WiiU actually have some great downloadable titles during that time?  The only games I own for my WiiU are Little Inferno and Earthbound but I didn't really hear anything about any other downloadable titles.  What else released during the supposed "drought" months that you think would discount it as being a drought?

Who said they had to be great? The point of a drought is that it suggests no games at all, good or bad. Since quality is subjective, it mucks up the discussion.

Nonetheless, The Cave, Puddle, and Runner 2 were released on Wii U in that January-February period. Though I don't see the relevance, they have Metascores of 72, 70, and 84, respectively.

It got LEGO City, Monster Hunter 3G Ultimate, a late but fairly solid Need For Speed port, Game & Wario, and Injustice.

So explain to me the reason noone is buying the Wii U.

Because no one wants Game & Wario, everyone already played Need For Speed, Injustice is lousy, and Monster Hunter was also available on 3DS. The only potentially system-moving software there is LEGO City.

You're totally right, I just wanted to hear directly from a Wii U fan why no one's buying it.

...Okay? Well the answer is because it lacks compelling software.

I know that, its just that Soundwave had it locked in his head that something compelling has actually come out for the Wii U

Oh. Well, he blew it.

Fun story, one of my friends bought a Wii U at launch in anticipation of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. He wasn't intending to buy a 3DS at the time. Then Fire Emblem came out and everyone was going nuts about it, so he caved and bought a 3DS and Fire Emblem.

When Monster Hunter was released the next month, he found himself tight on funds, obviously because he had spent over $200 on games the previous month. He wanted it in HD, but he went for the cheaper option instead... Monster Hunter on 3DS. He hasn't played his Wii U all year.

Hahahahaha.

WiiU lanches without the ability to play 8th gen games, and doesn't showcase any graphical prowess over the much cheaper, and already established, PS3 and xbox.

Saying it is down to simply how many games are out is just wrong. People here are really clutching at straws trying to big up the WiiU.

Wii U games are 8th gen, categorically. To state otherwise is revisionism.

No it isn't. The Wii U gets 7th gen ports so why instantly is everything on it 8th gen? They arent. If I go and play MGS on my PS3 its not suddenly a 5th gen console is it? Its a 5th gen game on a 7th gen console. Im waiting for a real 8th gen game to appear on the wiiu as everything at the moment seems to be just what the xbox and ps3 can already do.

I meant games developed for Wii U originally.

If thats how your going play it then how do you figure the gen of a multiplat like black ops as the PS3, xbox and wii u got the same thing? What gen something is is totally to do with the tech. Anything else is just guess work. Im happy to say that so far there hasnt been a single 8th gen game on the wii u, but thatll change when they bring out mario karts. Mario 3d just looks like a standard run around platformer from this gen.

So 8th gen is a standard arbitrarily determined by you. Good to know.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Tech is quantifiable, whereas yours ain't and is just guess work by you to big up old tech. There was an epic thread on eurogamer where it was clearly spelt out what a next gen console is - a game console that can play next gen games.

If you just say "its the next one so its next gen" then why isn't my microwave a next gen console? Your argument cant hold up to even the most basic scrutiny.
