Forums - Sony Discussion - Amazon Customer Reviews for PS4 - Trolls or serious issues?

Always funny to read how people blow up such little things. First of all most user reviews (for any product) are always negative, simply because people like to complain their 'bad' experiences. Of course if you have been waiting for months and the PS4 (or any product) you receive is DOA, thats really crap. But that does not mean the product itself is crap or of bad quality.

I work at the biggest computer hardeware reseller (business to business) of my county as a technical support engineer. Every month we sell thousands of desktops, notebooks, tablets and mobile phones of all brands, and i can tell you we get DOA's all the time, no matter if its HP, DELL, Samsung or Apple. If i would only look at all the reported DOAs and defects i would think all these brands are crap, but compared to how many we sell its almost nothing.

Sony aims at a DOA rate of 0.04%, so that would mean 400 DOAs on every million sold. In reality it will probably be more like about 2 or 3%, thats the normal failure rate for hardware. So that would mean about 30.000 DOAs on every million. If all those 30.000 thousand complain on internet you will get the feeling there is no working PS4 out there, while in reality most gamers are just enjoying their new system.

260 DOAs out of all the units sold on Amazon (assuming their is no trolling involved), thats nothing to worry about. No doubt that when you receive a DOA unit it feels the hardware is crap. I get my PS4 in 2 weeks (Yay for living in Europe) and if its DOA i will not be happy for sure. But knowing how things work (when it comes to production, DOA's, warranty, services, etc) makes it easier to relativize situations and  messages like this.

So sure some people will have trouble with their PS4, which sucks, but im pretty sure the hardware will be of decent quality and in general there is no reason to worry about anything.

The .04% failure rate was about the systems that luanched before the official PS4 launch date which was about 4,000 PS4'S from the Taco Bell promotion and review units. I've seen the 2 or 3% failure rate constantly being thrown around as the "acceptable failure rate", but I haven't been able to find the source for that number.

Knowing from working with all these companies, HP, DELL, etc. to them 2 or 3% failure rate is acceptable from a business perspective. Every DOA's needs to be replaced and cost them money, 3% does not effect them too much, they calculated it into their margins. When the PS3 came out i was working as a game journalist, i had discussion with a Sony rep from the Netherlands about this topic. He told me they aim to keep the DOA rate below 1%, but some batches have more DOA's then others. Realisticly 2% was still with their margins, was his final answer.

Its not so easy to find direct sources for these numbers, but i know from experience about 2% is DOA. And i mean really dead/defective on arrival. You have to keep in mind that this is not always a production failure. Some delivery services really transport their goods in a not to ordered manner, for sure parts of the DOAs are from bad transportation. By they way the defective rate is way higher than the DOA rate. About from all systems sold about 15 to 20% has a defect within 3 years. Noted that a lot of these defects are from user abuse.

But the question was if there are serious issues. For sure there are none. Agreed that from a customer perspective 20.000 - 30.000 DOAs seems unacceptable, but from a business stand point its not really a big deal.

Thanks, but i never trust anything coming from SonyGaf.

I know mine is working fine, been playing Killzone, Madden, Warframe, and Resogun without any issues. And the update took about 25 seconds for me. Not sure if it was pre-downloaded on my console or what.

Would lie if I say that this was expected but with all the noise around that in the past days I believe it is unfortunately true and the PS4 seems to have a high level of DOA... That being said; we did not see how the Xbox One will do... I hope it will obviously do better (which does not seem to be a though challenge so far) but it may also be bad.

Now the reaction of some fans saying that it is all those Xbox fans out there making things up is really funny :) I remember not a long time ago when some fans where trolling all the news, YouTube videos, etc... and then those same fans claimed that it was the majority of the Internet who were responsible and not only a a certain fan base...

Really funny :)

the applause of unbiased journalists at E3 showed that that was NOT fanboys.  Hell even the Jimmy Fallon crowd was "trolling" on Xbox at that time.  The majority of the internet (and world) was against Xbox.  Sorry but people don't like DRM and it wasn't a rumor like this it was official word from the company.

What is your point? Did not argued about that :)

Just stop pretending that all this noise from MANY sources regarding the PS4's DOA is the result of some Xbox One fans out there... it is not.
Sorry but people don't like to buy DOA consoles...

I'm saying SOME hardware failure is expected.  We're more connected than ever.  Every little case is going to get reported more than in the past.  I could see this coming a mile away and I'm sure every defect will be scrutinized a week from now too.  It's just annoying that people act like it's an anomaly.

This console war went from resolution to who has the higher failure rate. Lol!

If the PS4 does not have at least a 15% failure rate at this stage of its life cycle. Then I will be extremely shocked.

There is no way a shipment of millions will not have tens of thousands of defective consoles. Especially with the pace they are producing the product just to meet the expected demand.

I'm guessing a lot of those are related to the HDMI issue that has a pretty simple fix.

While I have no doubt there were some broken consoles that were legit. I think people really need to settle down and stop freaking out.

If Sony sold about 1M consoles already, you should expect at least 40,000 of them to have broke. You can clearly see that in addition to legitimate concerns for their machines, that there are fanboys on there as well.

This is a risk you take, and it's far to early to call if a large number of units are effected. The loudest customer is always the disgruntled customer so let's take a chill pill, and pray to god that this isn't a larger issue.

and it's easier for those cases to become news than ever before.  A little tweet here or Amazon review there turns those 40,000 into 400,000 in some people's perceptions (yes I've seen people saying that PS4 has 40% or higher failure rate)

Dont see why Amazon allows people who didnt buy from them to leave a review, obviously trolls will take advantage, not only on this but all other products they sell too.
I would only trust the verified purchases, and its a shame some people got faulty units, but it is a small amount. Will be interesting to see how the consoles cope after intensive use in the long run.

I use Amazon a lot and have left a few reviews, good and bad for items I've purchased elesewhere as the places that I purchased them from don't allow you to leave reviews.  I just looked at the reviews being left for the PS4's and most of the reviews, good and bad, are "Amazon verified purchased".

I didn't buy a PS4 which makes it the first console launch since the original NES that I didn't buy at launch.  Between my 3DS, iPad, PC, PS3, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360 and older systems, I just don't have time for anything new.  My question is, where is all the talk on this site from people who have bought a PS4?!?

I guess they are all too busy playing their ps4's lol.

and people like me who wont have it for a few more months are on here =(
