SEGA and Nintendo did not have the financial muscle to compete with sony dude.

If there was no sony, do you honestly think that those gamers from the 80's (who would have been reaching teens/late teens by the time sony came on the scene) would have suddenly neglected gaming?

As i said, gaming was about to BOOM anyway in the 90's, sony just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time grrrrrrrrrrr.

Also, you talk about crash and spyro? were thay THAT popular considering that ps1 sold 100+ million?

Sonic games sold millions on a console that only sold like 35 million. (and data was harder to track back then)

So, you're saying that Nintendo wasn't making good profits back then?

I think that if there was no Sony, the market would be much smaller today.

Yes, Crash and Spyro were very popular.

Sonic games released on consoles with barely any other IPs to compete with but I have to ask - are you including the bundle Sonic The Hedgehog game in that bundle? Also, correct me if I'm wrong but Sonic is a Japanese game.

Nintendo were making profits yes, but they were millionaires, not WE HAVE A GOD DAMN BOTTEMLESS PIT OF MONEY TO THROW AT DEVELOPERS TO WIPE OUR ARSES FOR US billioniares.

Sonic 2 sold over 6 MILLION on a 35 million selling console, thats a huge attach rate. (bundles or not, cos crash was bundled too)

Barely any other ip's? and how many ip's were around on ps1 when crash came along? Sonic had to compete with the likes of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Streets of Rage, Fifa and many more.

I'm gobsmacked man.

Whats Sonic been a Japanese game (at a time when Japenese games were dominant) got to do with it?

Lol Lawlight, Sony did nothing but sell their systems in more countries. Ninty can't afford that for obvious reasons. Sony had the muscle. Gaming market would be the same if Ninty could afford it. They can only expand the market in countries they can sell their hardware.

Providing factual, official numbers = making excuses? Okkaayyy...

Next time if you don't want to be proven wrong, don't make things up.

You're still going on about your bundles but refuse to provide sources for your information. Again, you shouldn't make things up.

You want numbers Sony won't provide, they're embarassing.

In your eyes Motorstorm is a very successful IP and each release has sold amazingly well. You keep believing that.

I'm not making anything up. The facts show Motorstorm is one of the most successful franchises ever. The end.

You won man, enjoy your victory.

You're still not providing me with any numbers to back your claims.

Also, using Apocalypse as an example? Really? That game was unlucky to be scheduled to be released when the tsunami and the Christchurch earthquake hit. It was delayed several times and when finally released, released without any advertising because of the sensitive nature of the content at the time.

As for Pacific Rift, it sold 1M in about a month:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/motorstorm-pacific-rift-passes-one-million-sales

Why did you ask me questions if you already have excuses? Just tell me your ridiculous excuses and we move from there.

I bet that 1M was sold to stores, not consumers. That's the figure Sony always gives to publications.

Yes, I use Apocalypse as an example. It was a game in the series that sold horribly at launch and continued to sell horribly over time. That shows how little of a following the series had.

It sounds like you want to know the exact number of bundles. Instead, I want to play stupid and ignore bundles even happened. So the Motorstorm series went from selling nearly 4 million units to less than 400K after three PS3 releases, pretty amazing stuff.

As much as the original Motorstorm benefitted from process of elimination through the launch window, I would actually say Apocalypse's plummet stems from the fact that it was released during the PSN outage.

I don't really care for the series, just an observation.

Dude, back then, you didn't need to be billionnaires to buy exclusives. Nintendo were making hundreds of millions of dollars in profits per year. A shame they were using intimidation tactics and developers were happy to run to Sony when the PS1 came to life.

Also, I don't think Sony was doing bundles before the PS3 era - at least, not that at recall. I know Sega and Nintendo were doing that.

And none of those Sega Genesis games were big like the PS games. Hard to believe that only 3 Sega Genesis games sold more than 2M. Sonic and Aladdin were all they had. And you wonder why Sega couldn't compete with the PS1 - they couldn't even compete with Nintendo.

Finally, what do you thin Sonic being a Japanese game has to do with sales?

So 1080p makes better gamers but not better games.

it will sell oceans anyway

The series never sold more than 2 million per game.

I could be completely wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure the Sega Mega Drive was being sold in more countries than the SNES. (or am I thinking of the fact that outside of NA and Japan, it outsold the SNES everywhere?)

Either way....

Oh dear. you don't think sony games were bundled back in the ps1 days? get real man.

If Nintendo had BILLIONS of dollars like sony, then the developers would have bent over backwards and asked "how high" when told to jump, and took it just like they did with sonys money.

Define big for me? because a lot of SHITTY PS1 games sold big due to sony advertising (their damn advertising was EVERYWHERE in the UK, even god damn nightclubs)

You keep saying i wonder how SEGA could not compete with sony, so i will SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU........... they did not have the financial or advertising muscle that sony had...... what part of SONY DID NOT EARN, BUT BOUGHT THEIR SUCCESS DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

Lastly, Sonic sold very solid on both Japan & the UK/Europe, so whats that got to do with anything?

Also, I think some of you guys are misinformed on what a 'bundle' actually is, or how the metagame behind bundling works:

SMB1/Duck Hunt, Super Mario World, Sonic 1, Wii Sports - primary pack in with every system, usually to demonstrate the hardware capabilities.

Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter II Turbo, Virtua Fighter 2, Resident Evil 4, Halo 3, Gran Turismo 5 etc. - limited time SKUs geared towards markets that are buying a system intently for the relevant game.

VF2 =/= SMW. Let's stop with this madness.
