Forums - Politics - Is the FDA justified in banning Trans Fats?

So, it looks like the FDA is gearing up to restrict the use of PHO's, or trans fats, in the United States. Studies linking it to heart disease seem to have broken the back of this particular camel, and lowered intake over the past few years seem to show consumers don't have much taste for it either.

So...should we care? Is this the kind of thing they should do, or is this overreach?

The standard, from what I can tell, is that they've classified trans fats as unsafe at any amount. Basically, any amount of this has a detrimental affect on a person's health.

Alcohol, so far as I'm aware, that's not really true of.

As far as cigarettes go, I'm really not sure how that works.

Cigs are bad for you always. Even one cigarette is bad.

Heart diseases is a bigger issue, so I understand it. If it's true that trans fats are bad at any dosage then I agree with the ban.

I remember hearing the same thing a while back, so I'm not sure how exactly the regulation works. I know there are very strict and very specific rules for tobacco products, though. It could be that, if companies still want to use trans fats, they'd have to follow similar rules.

I remeber when they started to get rid of all these fats in Canada and the food all started to taste disgusting. Its not worth it IMO. I'd rather take 5years off my life to have those fats back in all the food.  The same happened when they switched to whole grains in everything.  Take doritos chips and Wonder bread for instance, they taste nasty compared to before.

It goes like this: this is bad any nobody is using -> BAN

This is bad and everybody is using -> high taxes

Yet, i have to give then some credit, most os the people know what is bad, and is good, yet they chooose the bad, because their tastes only.

Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

America is quite fat and this is an issue, I'm not sure how to solve it though.

but I don't think banning that was the way to go.

Cigarretes and alchohol have a sin tax that varies from state to state.
Dorito's don't.

I think I'm ok with it, why use them if you can get a comparable taste with a healthier substitute?

The problem is you can't.  Go buy some Canadian versions of US food on ebay or something and taste the difference.  The problem is due to food portions and lack of excercise not some fats in the food.
