Some sites are very likely posting VGChartz information without even attributing it to VGC. I don't think this is malice, it could be just journalists having the numbers in their mind and writing them in articles without thinking.

Here's an example:

With Wii sales standing at around 45 million units

Now where else could they get this number?

A negative one from Joystiq, which lead to a negative Wii-fanboy one. Seriously, I won't link them, because they spend the majority of the article going "Uhh, we don't trust Vgchartz, nobody does." Surprising the comments are more positive then the actual article.

"VGChartz released internal data Saturday claiming that Wii Sports, Nintendo's sports title that comes bundled with each Wii outside of South Korea and Japan, is the world's best-selling game.

According to the report, VGChartz software data for the week ending December 27, 2008, found that Wii Sports "has now passed sales of Super Mario Bros. at 40.24 million units, making it the best-selling video game of all time. The game...reached that milestone after 110 weeks of sales."

Yahoo picked up the article on Wii Sports and it was the main story on Yahoo.com for awhile.

"Wii Sports is best-selling game ever
Jock blockbuster topples Mario.

Well, that didn't take long.

According to game-tracking website VGChartz, sales of Nintendo's pop-culture phenom Wii Sports have surpassed those of legendary platformer Super Mario Bros., making the breakout Wii title the best-selling video game of all time. And it only took two years and two months to do it."

I was watching EP Daily yesterday, and they had the story about Wii Sports on there. They also talked about the top selling games and how Nintendo owned the top 10. The only problem, is that Victor said, "According to the Japanese game site vee-gee-charts." I guess ioi is actually in Japan =O

Playstation Around The Web on the PS Blog linked to the "Killzone 2 breaks first party pre-order records" story

PS3theevolution claiming Vgchartz is undertracking Killzone sales.  Somebody should contact them for an apology after NPD drops.

http://ps3thevolution.com/2009/03/12/killzone-2-are-the-worldwide-sales-accurate/

What are the worldwide sales figures for Sony’s killer app? Currently VGChartz has the overall number at 1.04 million but there are still some who believe this to be too low. No offense to VGChartz. Weren’t there over one million pre-orders in the UK alone? Well, that is what was said and right now gamers want answers. Is VGChartz being overlooked, it appears so by many KILLZONE 2 enthusiasts.

Why is it that we as gamers hope for such trivial results when in reality we profit nothing? The game has been purchased by reportedly 1.04 million gamers and it seems they are currently enjoying it a great deal, shouldn’t that be enough? Well, NO! KILLZONE 2 supporters want their beloved KILLZONE 2 to sell like crazy. The intelligent gamer would respond stating that high sales are desired so that guarantees of a more over the top and ambitious sequels to the franchise could be in the works.

Soon NPD will be reporting the results and if their results mirror VGChartz then VGChartz might be owed an apology. However, the likelihood of that happening is slim. Let’s face it, it is still early and if 1.04 million is the right number, great. KILLZONE 2 released February 27th. The game has only been out 2 weeks. In the gaming world that is an admiral accomplishment even if the game boasts the most aggressive and intense action with incredible eye-popping visuals.

Are the current numbers accurate? Well ThEvolution is hoping for the best.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.
