Forums - Gaming - Questions about resolutions

A. I think so too. Image quality will be sacrificed for prettier effects like always.

B. I don't think any major game dev will have the gall to release a sub-HD game, however. 720p really should be the floor for marquee titles, even on XBO. I don't know about smaller devs. If both games are 720, you'll simply see a larger graphical difference than we currently do with higher res PS4 multiplats .Unavoidable situation, unless the PS4 version is gimped.

C. Maybe some downloadable title will have 2560 x 1440 or something. Only a few.

D. No.

Around the Network

Certainly not.

The majority of PS4 launch games are already running at 1080p, and developers will become more accustomed to the console and produce better looking games as time goes on. Improvements to textures and models will be harder to notice at 720p, 1080p will certainly be a priority for developers.

I think the real question is whether the games will be 30fps or 60fps.

A. Gonna be blunt, I think the PS4 will be rendering at 720P at the end of this gen. While it can handle 1080P and 900P, games will get more and more demanding as the years pass and eventually we'll be back at 720P. Do you agree or not?

B. Assuming the first question becomes a reality, what res would the game be on Xbox One? Say if it were a multiplat, do you guys think that the Xbone would be forced to render the game at sub-HD resolutions??? I believe they would, simply because if they made it 720P the PS4 version would look miles ahead better than the Xone version while performing better.

C. Do you think they'll be a game running higher than 1080P this gen?

D. Are you satisfied with 720P being the norm for another six years?

Also, IMO they should've waited for next gen consoles till next year, could've gotten way more powerful hardware for the same price.

A. Yes, and people would not even notece. The resoution crisis is just a buzz argument right now in the console wars. People can't see the difference betwin still shots of BF4 on PS4 and One.

B. 720p also, but with few effects.

C. It is possible, but it would sacrifice much of the performance and effects, it will just make the poor rendering and effects easier to find.

D. I have a fealling this generation will be shorter, about 5 years max. Resolution is not everything, TV was stucked in 480p for 30 years. 720p has been a standard for almost 15 years by now and hasn't reach a markert penetration beyond developers countrys.

The only ones realy interested in ramp the TV resolution are TV manufectores and retailor. The 3D didn't have the impact they wished, Stmart TVs the same.

A: I believe 900p will be the norm on both consoles, and I don't doubt many of the games will run at 720p in the long run. Requirements will increase, and since the CPU on both consoles is so weak, the burden will increase on the GPU.

B: I don't think devs will go below 720p if the former becomes true. I'd expect graphics toned down, but not rendering below 720p since 4k TVs will become more common as time goes on.

C: Games rendering higher than 1080p isn't a realistic proposition, these consoles don't have the GPU power to render above it without huge compromises.

D: Yes. My TV is a 720p Plasma, so I'm completely fine with 720p being the norm if proper anti-aliasing is used.

They real question will probably be whether games are going to be 720p60 or 1080p30 in the end. Also, it's hard to tell about the Xbone because it seems to be relatively close in power to the PS4 but at the same time, there's signs it's weaker than expected (CoD: Ghosts). I expect it to end up relatively close, though, once devs get the hang of things.

There will, for the most part, be no games running at a resolution higher than 1080p. It's too demanding, and it doesn't bring a notable improvement for most TVs. There could be a few games but they'll use a minimalistic style almost certainly.

1080 will be standard on PS4... it is already defined.

Battlefield 4 is a exception because D.I.C.E. didn't have time to work with the game... I'm sure all games launched after 2014 will be 1080p.

I don't mind at all as long as the gaming goes as fluid smooth all the way.

My gut feeling says the opposite, this generation will be longer with a move to streaming services. If something new comes in 5 years it will be a streaming only box. Nintendo will probably come out with a new console in 5 years, but no new hardware monster from Sony or MS.

TV broadcast was stuck over here in 480i for 30 years. Europe enjoyed 576i though.
720p and 1080i are used for tv broadcasts nowadays, movies 720p 1080p streaming, 1080p optical discs. 1080p is the real standard.

Anyway speak for yourself, I'm very interested in ramping up the resolution. I like an immersive experience and a bigger field of view does a lot to achieve that. A 40 degree field of view would be ideal but 1080p is still lacking at that range. A 4K display will make 720p look better too btw, you get a better result upscaling from 720p to 2160p (3x, 3x pixels) then from 720p to 1080p (1.5x, 1.5x pixels)

Hardly - the first 20nm GPUs would be too expensive for its diminishing returns on performance per watt. All these new GPUs you see AMD and Nvidia releasing have their improvements based mostly on power consumption increases than miniaturization. Go compare the size and consumption of a Geforce Titan with a enthusiast level Geforce 4 from ten years ago.

And I don't think your first propositions are going be true too. I would bet there was a net gain on resolution over the course of the seventh generation. Indeed, seven years ago you would have a much more convincing case by saying so of the PS3 and the X360 - lots of launch titles were sub-720p and market penetration of HDTVs was slower than expected. And that's on top of both consoles being memory-starved, which is very important for resolution.

So there's probably no reason for resolutions to go down. The opposite seems more likely, specially from first-parties.

4K will be the standard in 2 years and the 2 years after that we will see 8K on the ps4 while the wii U and X1 will struggle to do 1080p, I also expect the ps4 to sell 300mill by 2016

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
