Forums - Gaming - Questions about resolutions

A. Gonna be blunt, I think the PS4 will be rendering at 720P at the end of this gen. While it can handle 1080P and 900P, games will get more and more demanding as the years pass and eventually we'll be back at 720P. Do you agree or not?

B. Assuming the first question becomes a reality, what res would the game be on Xbox One? Say if it were a multiplat, do you guys think that the Xbone would be forced to render the game at sub-HD resolutions??? I believe they would, simply because if they made it 720P the PS4 version would look miles ahead better than the Xone version while performing better.

C. Do you think they'll be a game running higher than 1080P this gen?

D. Are you satisfied with 720P being the norm for another six years?

Also, IMO they should've waited for next gen consoles till next year, could've gotten way more powerful hardware for the same price.

Do you have any actual proof or knowledge to back up these assumptions?

Thought not.

Well... a few of the high demanding games arent even running at 1080p right now anyway but I don't think the ps4 will go down to 720p.. As we go into the future, the games will have better graphics but also be better optimized as well so I think it will just run at 900p for the rest of its life...

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

My PC gaming friends think the same. They are predicting first a jump to 1080p then back down to 720/900p as games improve on graphic sides of things. Similar to what ryse did.

But yes optimizing as time goes on will make them look better regardless of the resolution.

Games below 1080 will be rare on ps4. Xbone will probably go under that in order to keep the same effects.

C, yeah once 4k gets adopted. Most games will stay 1080, but not all.

D, nope

No I think most games for the upcoming gen will be 1080p. Most games on the PS4 are already 1080p and it usually takes time for developers to make full use of a consoles power so I think they will be able to improve graphics while maintaining 1080p.

I think that many of the games will be 720p on both consoles 2-3 years from now. The 1st party games on PS4 will hit 1080p, but only because it will be a probable design mandate.

Many of Multi-plats 2-3 yrs from now should give you a choice. If you want better this or that choose 720p. If you want less this or that but want enhanced graphics, 1080p. That would sooth most people.

It is near the end of the end....

A. I think we're more likely to see a 720p/900p situation with 1st party at 1080p on ps4 the first few years. Then later on 3rd party can consistently hit 1080p on ps4 and 900p on xb1, or both 1080p with things toned down on x1. 60 fps games will still be a rarity, solid (locked) 30 fps on ps4 with screen tearing and fps drops on xb1.

C. Maybe a few indie games will offer a 4K mode. GT6 will have 4K rendered screenshots, maybe the showroom in 4K as well. It's too big a difference for anything else. (4x 1080p, 9x 720p)

D. No. (I bought a 1080p tv in 2006 for ps3/360...)

I think few games will be below 1080p on PS4 and all of them in the first two years because when devs started to master the PS4 you will see only 1080p games.

Devs choice

I think they'll keep aiming for 1080p, certainly devs like Naughty Dog. 3rd parties may cut corners, but I hope not
