Yeah the same happened to me with Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels. I thought that I could play the game using the Gamepad and when I entered the code on the Wii U eshop I got the same message as you. 

When I checked the Nintendo tech forums I saw a thread pointing out that the game had to be downloaded from a Wii, and a lot of people were pissed off. Nintendo should change that or at least make it more obvious. 

lol yeh thats some bs but i just noticed i have two email confirmations from nintendo and  it seems i have two seperate download codes to redeem 1080....hmm wondering if they will both work

You can also extract images from Miiverse posts by looking at the HTML code of the site when you have opened the post in your browser and copying the link that's somewhere in there, but I guess that tool makes it a little easier. :P

Wii U news of 15/01/2014:

  • Simon's Quest is coming tomorrow to Wii U and 3DS. You know what would be awesome? Cross-buy!
  • Japanese Charts: HUGE drop for everything, but Vita. Wii U down to 14k, ouch. And 3D World sold just about the same...
  • The budget for WatchDogs, pre delay, was around $68 million!
  • Well, that's it, I guess. I'll link you guys to the best thread I've done!
  • Also, because I've wanted to tell you guys, the reason I make dates different is because in my country we do  DD/MM/YY and not MM/DD/YY.
