A lot of it is about a creeping sense of constant dread; there's the sharp spikes of terror too, but the suspense of slowly advancing through the dark, not knowing what lurks around the next corner, or slowly pulling back a curtain by holding a button, is the scariest part.

That's the type of horror I enjoy; the uneasiness. I'm not so much a fan of the in your face gore stuff.

You can turn off random encounters in Bravely Default, iirc.

Kingdom Hearts is pretty good if you like action rpgs. Better on New 3DS for camera, but plays fine on original 3DS. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is also highly recommended... once you get past the first 2 hours or so.

I'm assuming Pokemon's too obvious?

The last and only RPG I played is Dragon Quest 9 on the DS lol.
