[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]
Here's an interview about XB3D
http://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-on-xenoblade-chronicles-3d-dev-length-challenges-why-new-3ds-only-more/

Sooo, just some weird thoughts...
What if the NX is simply a dual-screen handheld that plays Wii U games and the upcoming Nintendo mobile games?
Some would say that it's a bad idea to base a handheld on an unsuccessful console, but where's the problem? It would be like a more powerful New 3DS with (hopefully) better analog sticks, nothing unfamiliar.
Another concern could be the price. Yes, it would be the biggest power gap between two Nintendo handhelds, but I think it's not impossible in 2016/2017 at a 200-250€ price tag. Maybe two 480p screens at first and a 720p or 1080p upper screen in later revisions. They could use flash modules that would work on normal Wii U consoles with an USB adapter.
We learned Nintendo can't support two consoles throughout a generation, the last big 3DS game from an EAD team was A Link Between Worlds in late 2013 for example (that also makes it pretty clear that they'll stop supporting the 3DS before the Wii U). There are only a few games from subsidiaries, Japanese third parties and some indies left. And that problem would be even bigger when they're developing mobile games.
Possible benefits:
- many of their already released first-party games could still sell a lot on a handheld, they underperformed because of the install base, not because they're bad games. The console would enter the market with a killer lineup of exclusive games and it wouldn't have competition on the (admittedly shrinking) dedicated handheld market because the Vita surely won't get a successor. Some games wouldn't work well, but maybe you could connect it to a TV if you want to use games with motion controls (they're almost irrelevant anyway)
- constant stream of first-party releases, mainline Pokémon games playable on a home console
- they wouldn't have to make games like Mario Kart for both handheld and console, they could use their resources for more MK8 DLC and maybe a F-Zero game and release MK9 on the next home console
- they only greenlighted big-budget titles like Zelda Wii U because they expected much higher console sales. The additional install base would allow more of these projects
- the handheld would get Japanese third-party support (Western support on a handheld is basically impossible nowadays) and those games would automatically be on Wii U as well
- they had problems adapting to HD development and they'd struggle to make the next step in 1-2 years. They would have enough time to prepare for their next console
About the next home console:
A 300-350€ home console with a little more power than the PS4 in 2016/2017 would be disastrous, it's too late to compete with PS4 and too early to compete with PS5. They should go for a 4K console with enough power for VR (current-gen platforms will have their issues) in 2018/2019. Or maybe VR for games will already be dead by then and only be used for porn. And going for Western third parties will be important because I have a feeling that there will only be one competitor in the home console market in the 9. generation.

Well, the Snes was a mass market product but the n64 wasn't. And yes, Sony gave them what they wanted and Sony had a lot more money than Nintendo which is why Nintendo should have taken it more seriously when countless amounts of developers requested things. And yes, there was a lot of marketing and etc involved but MS needed to get their foot hold in the market and the best way to do that is through third parties (and obviously marketing but everyone had marketing of some kind, even Nintendo). Cause the thing is, while MS and Sony had their own first party exclusives, they really aren't as good as Nintendo's. Like yes, they are great in their own right but none of them can really sell as consistantly through out the generations as Nintendo's have been. I feel like if Nintendo listened to the third parties in the n64, the ps1 and n64 would have switched sales because the n64 would have had great third party games + great first party games vs a brand that has not been in the space before. If they started it with the GC, it wouldn't have had similar sales as the ps2 but it certainly would have sold more than it did. Yes, it was easy to develop for and etc but its caviats and not listening to third parties with its mini discs resulted in MS coming close. And yes, it was also a number of other factors as well but if Nintendo had as much third party support as MS did, they would have really sold a lot more than xbox "Because, in the end, power doesn’t matter. They will go where they see an opportunity to make the highest profits." It was a "really easy" compared to the ps3/360 most likely because the 360 used a PowerPC architecture kind of like the wiiU. The issue is that as more and more devs got the devkits from ps4/x1. And you can be like, "oh but they are still developing some games for the last gen consoles" but the issue with the wiiU is that it has too many issues for developers to develop for them with little in return. They have to optomize all their games and engines so that it would adapt to the wiiU's OS/api. On top of that, they have to adjust their games so that it doesn't take up much space cause the ps3/360 has 200+gb of internal storage for tons of install files but the wiiU only has 28gbs. And most of all, it has no longivity in the eyes of the developers/publishers. Why go through all this trouble to optomize game engines when they will let go of the 7th gen soon enough? The developers and publishers made all these game engines for the next gen which can't be optomized for the wiiU because it doesn't have enough power and while they can try last gen engines, they won't be getting much longivity from those engines in the future for them to even bother to spend the development resources in doing so. Of course, if someone covers the cost of the "optomizations", they will gladly do it The ports wasn't the only thing wrong with it, the games themselves were missing content as well as getting delayed. Even games like Rayman got delayed! People weren't buying third party games not because the ports had some hitches but rather they were missing content on the wiiU while everyone else, they had plenty of content that werent missing. And Nintendo didn't listen to the third party developers or else the wiiU wouldn't be what it is from a hardware prespective... There have been countless interviews through out the years of developers wanting an easier architecture to work on and whats easier than PowerPC? x86! And even the public knew this was a thing for a while now so there is no way Nintendo couldn't have known. On top of that, just look at how close the ps4 and x1 is and how far the wiiU is. The wiiU launched only a year earlier, it shouldn't have been that different if they listened to the third parties. Instead, they went for their own thing with a low SoC and a gamepad which costs half the price of the console... Heck, its so low power than external hard drives require two usb ports in order to power themselves. There is no way Nintendo listened to the third parties with the wiiU period. Low storage, low power, completely different architecture and so many other things while if you look at MS and Sony, they both listened to the third parties and thats why their consoles are so close. The only real difference are the resolutions in the multiplat games, everything else is basically the same. The wiiU launched at $350 which is the current price of the x1, there is no way that it was out of Nintendo's reach if they didn't have the gamepad. Even if they left gates open for third parties (which they didn't considering the policies of the wii), they need to do more. They need to make a console that third parties will be happy with or else they won't bother with it cause as you said, they only want money and if a console requires more work for them to develop for, they won't bother cause that will mean less money for them. And of course third parties won't create it by themselves, Nintendo needs to be the one that does it by getting the third parties to develop on their platform by doing the things I have said many times. It really won't be safer because as they experience delays and delays and delays, people won't buy their hardware because the bad press will be all over those delays... A better thing to do would be to get the third parties to fill in the gap in between their exclusives and then assign a team to do these realistic games. That way, the press and gamers will be happy with the games and they can take their time with realism. Also, splitting the staff between two systems won't be much of an issue because of the unified OS/API. The staff can work on muliple games on either platform at once since the engines will work on both handheld and consoles due to the unified OS and the engine that will adapt to both architectures. The only thing they would have to do is work a bit more on the console in order to show off the full strength of it. It will speed up development significantly and the end result will be that the console with plenty of first party and third party games. And the thing is, just because a game doesn't break even on one platform doesn't mean it will break even on the other due to the userbase... Why? Its simple because the Fusion that you are suggesting is targetting Nintendo fans! So if the Nintendo fans don't buy a game on one platform, they sure as hell won't buy it on the other because the tastes will be similar. W101 and Bayonetta 2 wouldn't have sold well even if it was on the 3ds because the 3ds is owned by Nintendo fans which don't care about those games proven by many third party games that don't do well on the 3ds either. There are only certain games that do well on Nintendo platforms in terms of non-Nintendo like games and just because Nintendo will be developing these games doesn't mean they will sell well. BF isn't really seen has a cod clone cause it does enough things to set itself apart. And even if it is seen as one, the sales don't come anywhere close to Cod either so that doesn't even matter. And again, third parties won't bother just like how they didn't bother with the wii with its large success because it wasn't a third party friendly console. If anything, third party would be even less inclined cause they will see it as Nintendo once again, not listening to them which has been the case since forever |
The N64 might not have been mass market priced at first, but it didn’t take long for that to happen.
Still, they were way cheaper than PS1.
Listening to 3rd parties would most likely help Nintendo fight Sony, but in terms of HW, Saturn was basically the same as PS1 and you didn’t see devs jumping on Saturn.
The reason, I think, was that Sony saw what Sega did in the Genesis era and took it to the next level. Which was something that, ironically, Sega forgot to do.
It wasn’t just a HW thing.
Sony had a strategy going that neither Sega, nor Nintendo had. And it was what 3rd parties wanted. It was perfect match and a win-win situation for both Sony and 3rd parties.
But the “worst” part was that with the PS1 Sony achieved something even more important: Playstation became synonymous with videogames – just like it happened with Nintendo during the NES.
After that it didn’t matter what Sega, MS and Nintendo did. Winning strategy + brand recognition…
I’m not saying that power or console parity doesn’t matter to business decisions. They do, but they sure do matter less when the market is right there.
Look at GTA. As you say, some things would have to be cut yet the older games made it to iOS. Why not do the same for Wii. They were basically one generation old. The engines were there. Porting it to Wii would have been more than easy. Capcom did it with Resident Evil 4.
Again, the main issue – not the only issue – will always be if there’s a market for 3d parties or not.
Wii U already had it’s future planned out even before it got to the market and even before final specs for PS4 and XB1 were finalized. Remember when PS4 was only going to have 4GB of RAM?
The decisions made to bring or not bring games for Wii U at that time were made purely on market expectations.
There were a ton of PS3/XB360 games that could have easily been ported to Wii U like so many others. And I’m just talking about Wii U’s first year.
Those decisions were made one or two years before Wii U came out and tanked. Of course that after that, the decision was even easier to take.
I agree that content cut out from the Wii U version was important, but I can’t believe that it was a decisive factor.
That alone can’t be the reason why millions opted to buy BO2 on XB360 and PS3 and not on Wii U. And you could also had both AC games, the Batman games and Ghosts to that list.
I see it hurting sales but when you are talking about things like missing DLC, which the majority of people don’t even buy, then that can’t be the biggest reason. It just can’t be.
I get that it might upset and discourage buyers but not like this.
You are right that Nintendo made several mistakes, but at the same time, giving 3rd parties what they wanted would have meant that Wii U would have become another XB or PS clone. They went with the power strategy with the N64 and the GC and they still failed.
They knew that just giving devs what they wanted wouldn’t get them squat.
What failed – again – and even more this time, was their strategy. Because what Nintendo is still lacking to this day is a core focused strategy and what they have since the N64 is a family friendly, Nintendo-core-fan strategy.
Unless they change that first, everything else might get them better results than Wii U but it won’t ever change in a meaningful way.
This is what you forget. Nintendo already a powerful, easy develop consoles with the GC and Wii. Did 3rd parties take the opportunity to really support them? No. To them, GC and Wii weren’t the venue for their games, so they skipped it.
I never said Fusion was for the Nintendo core. I actually support that idea because it can do exactly the opposite!
Sharing OS and API might help bring more games but it won’t replace developing for a single ecosystem. That will always free more staff, more marketing money, increase the potential userbase.
Speaking of which, even if 10M 3DS owners bought Wii U, the remaining user base might have bought games like W101 and B2 if it had appeared on 3DS aswell. Not everyone is going to buy another console for every game they like but can’t play them because they don’t own the other system. And that’s why I say potential users.
By freeing up staff, not only can Nintendo save their biggest franchises from over exposure, they WILL need to make new ones. And this is what I want to see happen!
I want all the Nintendo classics but I also want 3rd party type of games: I want a Gran Turismo/Forza type of game to complement MK; I want a Gears type of game to complement Splatoon; I want an Uncharted/Assassin’s Creed type of game to complement Zelda; I want a Halo/CoD/BF type of game to complement Metroid; a FF type of game to complement Xenoblade.
This is what Fusion will allow: a library filled with the best Nintendo games and other types of games aswell.
I’m not sure that all of these new franchises/games will make it, but Nintendo is doomed if they don’t try something.

Forget it.
Nintendo launched the 3DS after the incredibly successful DS with a 3D screen when everybody was talking about 3D and how it would change everything and what happened? That it failed. Why? Because no one wants a 250 € handheld. Ask Sony if you don't believe it.
If Nintendo launches another handheld for more than 200 €, Iwata needs to get fired because he obviously wouldn't have learned the lesson.
Please excuse my bad English.
