Completely agreed!! I'm sorry, but 1080p 60fps isn't the most important thing. |
It's not the most important thing... but 95% of games these days are multiplatform.... and most of those multiplats will be in higher resolution on PS4 than on XB1... this is more important than many people will admit.

LOL, I was a lurker for well over a year before making an account here. Weird and sad I know...

Yeah same here...but we evenutally made an account...most people didn't.
1080p is great in theory but if all the textures (and assets) on PS4 are as much blurred by some cheap Quincunux as this:

I would prefer 720p on PS4 thank you very much.
Even if you ignore the artificial sharpened XOne image, PS4 should not be so much blurred compared to PC. The texture in itself is not even middle res on The PC. There are as much details on PC than on the shapened XOne confirming it is barely a 720p texture. But where are the details on the PS4? If you really pay attention this "soft blur" appears slightly not only on DF footage but also on every BF4 Internet footage.

Even better, watch the uncompressed videos up on Eurogamer. I don't know about you, but I see a stark difference between the two from the single player campaign footage. The PS4 version of BF4 looks a lot better in motion than in those stills. You get; less aliasing, shimmering, artifacts and much cleaner image quality overall, with nicer lighting to boot (thanks to the inclusion of AO) - something which is missing from the XB1 version of this build. Although both will have it in the final version.
Also, for good measure I tried applying some sharpening effects through my display and MPC-HC video player (with sharpen complex 2 shader on) and.. well, lets say the the higher res one wins out by a country mile in terms of picture quality. And just think, BF4 is 720p/900p on consoles. The difference will be much more apparent when you're looking at a 720p game in comparision to a 1080p one.
Have to warn you though.. the files are massive. o.O

If you were to apply that same logic then the PC version should not be as blurred as the xbone version. The outlier here is clearly the xbox one, not the PS4. If you want to know about that so called soft blur is due to contrast, not due to some differences in textures. The xbox one limits its RBG range to avoid crushed blacks and give everything a bigger difference in colours. If digital foundry were to recapture it again but this time at full contrast, the xbox one version would look downright ugly with its true colour value compared to PC.

But I don't care about the XOne version. I don't want to compare it with the aliased 720p version. Please stop asking me to compare it with the shimmered XOne version. It is not a PS4/XOne contest.
I am comparing with the PC version. I would have wanted the same sharpness (at least) as the PC version. FXAA or upscaling should not blur so much the whole scene. PS3 upscaled or antialiased games didn't blur so much the textures nor the assets. Some are really sensitive to jaggies, I am not. I am sensitive to blur, since my PAL N64 I think which traumatized me in this aspect.I would prefer play a game on my crisp ambassador 3DS screen than on a 1080p strongly Quincunuxed game.
I have seen enough different internet footage to CONVINCE me that the "soft blur" Eurogamer was talking is not an illusion. Thank you Digital Foundry for daring to speak the truth in this troubled fanboys era.

I'm not, just wanted a friendly conversation. Then why bring up the comparision picture?
A game won't ever look as clear as running on natively on your display. Sure, FXAA doesn't help but its beats the alternative.. lower res, tonnes of jaggies. Oh and the textures in XB1 are not necessarily better (you can thank post processing effects for that.) It the post processing that just so happens to sharpen details, which btw.. also comes with its own baggage - something I wanted to point out. Plus the gamma/contrast is completely off in the XB1 footage.
And comparing consoles to a mid high/high end PC version is a bit disingenuous. These are $400/500 machines we're talking about. There are obviously going to be trade offs when the GPU's in them aren't exactly THAT strong to begin with - compared to whats available on PC.

Sorry if I sounded harsh. But this particular problem is important to my eyes.
I've being re-watching some old DF face-off of PS3 vs PC of old games and except when there is some really hig res assets on PC (which is in fact rare for multiplats) most of the 600p-ish upscaled anti-aliased PS3 (and X360) images versus PC are not loosing so much details (relatively with a 600p-ish against 1080p fsaa PC) and are basically the same as PC except the jaggies of course. I have even seen equivalent PS4 settings of BF4 on PC (900p upscaled to 1080p, strong FXAA), and there is no "soft blur". At all.
This particular problem is presently drowned in the general fanboys (of every sides) crazyness. But it is not about FXAA, because FXAA doesn't normally touch already soft middle res (yes middle res) textures. Same for upscaling, It should not blur (as much) the whole screen. But a strong Quincunux or shitty upscaler could be the culprit.
Never a console since the age of digital lossless data quality cables did that. The last one (before digital) in my mind was the Pal gamecube which added a strange blurriness compard to their NTSC cousins, and was certainly due to a poor NTSC / PAL upscaler or internal exotic Nintendo-ish strange NTSC/PAL processing. And again I never compared (well not vehemently at least) with the X1 exactly because I don't want my posts to be taken for Microsoft fanboism. That's why I compare with PC or similar PC settings as it should.
