Forums - Sales - American Next-Gen Software Sales: The Chart! (Jan-Apr)

Hey all.

I was working on this last night, and after seeing the whole "why devs should only dev for Wii" thread, I figured I would post this:

As you can see, I put the major notations for either sales spikes, or notable games. The only one not really on the list is Tiger Woods 07 and Sonic for the Wii, and a few Xbox 360 games (MLB 2k7, Def Jam Icon, ect).

The chart is with Wii Sports in the US. Taking Wii Sports out, would put the Wii down by around 1.5m units give or take.

Here's the chart with November/December added, and against the Xbox 360's first 6 months in the US (November 2005-Apr 2006). Also, note the data for the PS3/Wii: there is 1 week left for the official NPD month of april, so the Wii and PS3 should get 200k and 100k more s/w units respectively. Results are subject to change:

Also; the top 20 next-gen titles as of 6 months into sale (not including Wii Sports, as I'm counting software SALES);

Wii Play (Wii); 869,173

Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii) 434,486
Need For Speed: Most Wanted (Xbox 360); 394,500
Madden NFL 07 (Playstation 3) 377,009

Red Steel (Wii) 371,993

* Note about this list: I do not have 100% full data for the Xbox 360: I only have the games listed that eventually went over 500k. I *ASSUME *DOA 4 made the top 20, but I am unsure right now. If not, it'd be #21.

Top 20 Titles by Platform:
Nintendo Wii: 9
Xbox 360: 8
Playstation 3: 3

huh? I think everyone knows 360 sells the most software right now, particularly in the US where they have a userbase of 6.04 million to wii's 2.64 million to ps3's 1.39 million.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

which is why it is pretty amazing that the wii can compete in s/w sales even though they only have half the h/w

How about the statement I made stating the fact that the Wii s/w has done the less sales as the 360 did last year? Any opinions on that?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

where? I see where you say 360 sold 4.76 million in the similar timeframe, while Wii has 5.668 million. I will say that 360 selling that much software is good because they had smaller user base and more expensive games than wii does now, but they had arguably bigger releases in that time.

The chart is with Wii Sports in the US. Taking Wii Sports out, would put the Wii down by around 1.5m units give or take. For comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 4,760,000 software units in a similar timeframe with major releases such as Dead or Alive 4, Fight Night Round 3, Oblivion and Ghost Recon AW. Obviously, the April data may or may not be suspect due to no NPD data to compare against.

Feel free to discuss. The reason I posted this is that some people are under the assumption that the Wii software owns the US, when it's obvious it doesn't. Taking out Wii Sports, the Wii has around 4.2m software units sold, with 800k being Wii Play - a budget title with a free remote. Taking that out, the Wii has 3.4m full-price software units sold, for a tier ratio of around 2.0. Although the software has been improving, it still has a long way to go to be able to match the 360.

Why even take Wii sports out of the equation????

I agree With Johnsobas huh? I think everyone knows 360 sells the most software right now, particularly in the US where they have a userbase of 6.04 million to wii's 2.64 million to ps3's 1.39 million.

And have this to say...I should hope to God that Microsoft has more software etc. CONSIDERING THEY LAUNCHED WHAT YEAR AGAIN????? 2 years ago?? oh wait a microsoft fan will correct me and say no IT has been out 1 year and 6 months!!!! lol

Take it easy there...no need to go crazy.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

It's also easy when you look at the games. With 3rd parties, the Wii has unquestionably gotten the shortest end of the stick, and will continue to do so for some time.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Again, as I stated: The Wii hasn't sold anymore software than the 360 did in the same January-April timeframe if you just counted LTDs upto this point. The 360 sold around 4.7m units last year versus the Wiis 4.5m (not including Wii Sports). This is kind of suprising, since the Wii outsold the X360 by around 1 million units by this time. So.......That means the Wii has about a 5:3 ratio in terms of hardware, but only a 1:1 ratio in terms of software.
