Forums - Nintendo - Edge Article - Why Wii U should steal your Christmas

Who is going to buy the console other than hardcore Nintendo fans?

No sports games and no decent online community/games for so called "dudebros"

Casual aren't paying $300 just play a new Wii Sports or Wii Fit

The graphics are a little better than current gen, it lacks decent built in storage, (that's an extra $50-70 if you want to download anything) the online play isn't up to snuff, it lacks 3rd party support, it doesn't have DVD/Blu-ray playback, and it lacks a value system like PS Plus or Games for Gold.

Why would anyone (other than Nintendo die-hards) buy this console over the four that will be available this holiday? The value just isn't there.

1- Parents, nintendo fans, gamers who appreciate good games.

2-no sports games is true. No decent online community? Miiverse is an amazing online community, and the install base will keep growing for the few online multiplayers available.

3- But they pay $500+ to play angry birds and candy crush...

4- the storage is true, online play is as good as in any other system, little 3rd parties is no surprise even having the fastest selling console of history 3rd parties ignored the wii, why would anyone think the wiiU would be any different, lacks value? Well, at least you donot have to pay to play multiplayer.

5- People buy consoles because they want to play games on it. Games like pikmin, zelda and mario will attract people for their holiday gitfs, children who wants a new console or just gamers who appreciate good games.

he never said that, he said its ahead of every gen launches aligned besides B/W. And what makes u so sure it wont outsell B/W?

Oh ya!!!!!! its cuz all the casuals left, how could i forget

Doesn't matter how it aligns compared to other Pokemon games if it's not outselling them.

As for Pokemon, it's not because of the casuals, it's because it's on the decline among kids.

u have absolutely nothing to back up ur claims

You're right. The only thing that we have are Pokemon numbers.

Then stop saying things the numbers contradict.

Typical Edge just wanting to start crap between Sony/MS fans vs Nintendo fans. The Wii U is set up to be a secondary console to the other 2 next-gen systems! Nintendo themselves say they want to devaiate as much as possible from the other 2 consoles as they don't want to compete with them in a direct manner. As a 360 owner I never had a need to pick up a PS3 as they pretty much offered the same games except for a few 1st party exclusives the Wii became my console to play Nintendo exclusives.  I know more people that have Wii/PS3 or Wii/360 than I do PS3/360; but that's just my experience.

1- Parents will get tablets for their kids. Gamers have other consoles to play good games on.

2- Miiverse is as good a community as a forum. It's not a community of people playing a game together.

4- For good reason - the Wii sold fastest to casuals and not gamers. And that is why third party games sold poorly on it. It was a fad that did not last as long as the generation.

5- Mario didn't attract people to the WiiU last year.

Yep and based on those numbers Pokemon will sell extremely well

Yeps, and still manage to follow a downwards trend.

The release of zelda windwaker and the price drop has boosted wii u sales but they are still significantly below 360 and the boost is likely temporary. I'm a wii u owner and have to say all evidence points to a console about the same power as current gen so pricing still seems high. Gamepad is a little to large too.

I personally think the pricing has to be even lower before the wii u starts shifting in significant numbers. It's quite possible after launch ps4 and xbox one sales figures will reduce more than expected and they will be forced into a price drop situation. The market is saturated quite frankly.

I think in the UK at least the wii u is going to have to be significantly below £200 to shift in large numbers. The UK is the xbox's most successful european country sales wise. Some retailers have already abandoned the wii u due to low sales.

I just can't see the wii u doing huge business this christmas, the focus seems to be on ps4 and xbox one. I personally don't see pikmin or wonderful 101 doing that much business. I think it's mainly about Mario 3D driving sales really and anticipation for mario kart in the new year. Quirky titles like Wonderful 101 that don't have particularly high review ratings aren't going to sell the system. Rayman legends is a game that is also 1080p on 360 and PS3 and plays as well except it has different bits to replace the wii u gamepad features. It's a game widely available elsewhere to the same standard so again I don't think that is a system seller. Looking on this site they claim 230,000 units sold across all formats (excluding pc). That is a pitiful amount for such a brilliant game. Windwaker has done 350,000 units so far but clearly has only recently been launched but that figure isn't amazing to say the least.

I would say there is still a significant weakness in available software for wii u and interest in wii u is at fairly low levels. Nintendo still has a lot of work in getting more triple A titles to the console and reducing the console even further in price. It is highly damaging that they couldn't get Mario kart ready to launch before christmas.

Once again ur argument is based of off nothing.

New gens (Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White) have sold 15-18 million

Updated editions (Emerald, Platinum, Black 2/White 2) have sold 6-8 million

Remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver) have sold 10-12 million

maybe its not declining anymore and has reached the point where it sells rather consistantly, have u thought about that?

Why not? The big exclusive games are coming, the price is lower than the competition, and it has a better established existing library. I doubt it will crush the competition, but why won't it at least do decently?

Because the days of the casuals are over.

"the days of the casuals" never existed. The Casuals are a myth perpetuated by the games industry and media (and by association, the Hardcore gamers who swallow all the propaganda hook line and sinker) used in order to segregate gamers into demographics and attempt to explain (as awell as to undermine) the Wii's success. There are no "casuals," there are simply people who play video games, and people who don't..

The myth became so repeated, so pounded into people's heads, that MS and Sony actually believed it to be true, which eventually led hem to create the failures that were the Move and Kinect.

The real reason for the Wii's success, I don't think any of us really know the whole story. Hell, even Nintendo doesn't seem to know, as proven by their lack of success with the Wii U.

But I think I can at least get close to the answer; the real root of the Wii's success lies in a return to gamings more simplistic, more fun, and more fast paced roots; roots that gaming has since strayed from with its complex control, and over-the-top cinematics and dialouge residing over core gameplay - Basically stripping away the extra "fluff," or the bullshit in games, as I prefer to call it. And while Nintendo themselves have strayed from those roots with the Wii U (hence the poor sales), I see them slowly but surely returning to those roots yet again with games like Mario Land 3D, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Wii Fit U, Wii U Party, Wii Sports Club, etc..

Not sure what ur definition of significant is but the week ending oct 6 Wii U was 80k(US-32k, EU-34k) vs 84k(US-35k, EU-33k) for 360 and the following week Wii U sold 67k(US-30k, EU-26k) and 360 sold 76k(US-33k, EU-29k). I wouldnt say thats very significant.

Pikmin, Wonderful 101 and Rayman Legends are the wrong games to be expecting a holiday boost to come from. U should be looking at games like Wii Party U which the previous entry sold over 8 million, Wii Fit U which both previous versions sold over 20 million, Mario & Sonic Olympics which has sold about 4-8 million, 3D Mario which sells 6-12 million. And some other games that compliment them like Just Dance, Zumba Fitness, Sonic Lost World, Skylanders Swap Force.

Wii U Is being aimed at the family crowd this holiday while PS4/One will be sold mostly to 18-34 year old males. All 3 will sell extremely well this holiday but to different demographics. I see all 3 next gen consoles selling 2-3 million in Nov+Dec this year.
