Genuine question, have Crytek show anything so suggest its not the QTE fest it was at E3, is there at least the possibility to die now, or can you really still win by not pressing anything at all like at E3?

I think you are confusing it with another recent game....

Ryse: Son of Rome looks beautiful and feels slick. It may just be one of the Xbox One's "killer apps".

Tucked away behind the closed curtains of the "Adults-Only" section at Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show booth was a new playable demo of Crytek's upcoming Roman-tastic action RPG: Ryse: Son of Rome. I got a chance to try out a co-op arena survival scenario, playing together with a Microsoft rep who was much better at the game than I.

You may recall that in my Deep Down preview earlier this week, I described the combat as "clunky". Thankfully, there's none of that to be had in Ryse, as combos flowed naturally, the control scheme felt great, and the combat was nice and smooth.

The simple light attack, light attack, heavy attack combo that is present in just about every action RPG ever served me quite well, but I was able to easily experiment with dodges, blocks, and special attacks to vary up the combat. Pulling off combos feels good, and rewarding, without being overly punishing if you mess up. Anyone who has ever played God of War will feel right at home.

The quizzical "quick-time-events-that-aren't-really-quick-time-events" we saw last time we checked out the game were notably absent. Instead, when an enemy is ready to be finished, a skull appears above his head. Pressing any button while next to him initiates a finishing move.

Playing in co-op reminds me of another "of war" game: Gears of War. When your partner is downed, you have to run over and help him back up, and in the scenario I played, there were several mini-boss enemies that are much easier to take down if you work in tandem (one player distracts him while the other attacks). There didn't appear to be any co-op specific special moves, but some of the regular special moves (such as the AoE stun) work great when you have a partner.

If Crytek are known for one thing, it's making absolutely beautiful games, and Ryse is no exception. I confirmed that it was actually running on an Xbox One (as the Titanfall guys made the rather cheeky decision to be running the PC version at TGS), and was blown away by how beautiful the world was. Not only that, the little things, such as blood splatter and these beautiful "meaty" sound effects really helped paint a clear picture of the world around you.

The arena demo was a great way to showpiece the strong points of the game: its combat and its visuals, rather than the somewhat weak story that was showcased in the earlier demo. Enemies felt distinct, you were given a lot of toys to play with, and the "boss battle" I experienced was challenging, but not frustrating. At the end of the demo, I hungered for more, which is definitely a good sign. I was quite thoroughly entertained.

im not at E3 many people that got hands on said even if they didnt press a button they still won the quick times. Crytek even talked about it saying hitting the quick times got you more grusome kills.

So... you just decided to completely ignore what I  just posted?

ok so theyve changed the QTE icon from a button to a skull. But can you still not die?

It has Killzone now?

I hope not, way too claustrophobic and linear for me.

No.. it has Ryse and Forza.  Thanks.

this just proves you havent seen any of the new gameplay since E3.

Maybe.  But when you are turned off a series its hard to turn it back on, the camera always seems to be a very narrow field of view to me.  Now go and pick up on the guy saying Ryse is all QTE for the same thing.

I still think Ryse is the best looking game coming.

Nice cherry picking. Here's another side of the story.

Ryse: Son of Rome looks to be sinking

Microsoft likes Ryse: Son of Rome enough to put it in Monday's press conference. If my hands-on time was any indication of the final product, there's no reason to be so keen on it. Despite having only five minutes with the game, it didn't do much to impress.

The demo that I was given was the exact same segment that was shown during the briefing. It was useful in that it displayed the mechanics behind the fighting system, and probably gave a good indicator as to how the game will be structured.

The combat doesn't appear to be overly deep. Face buttons are assigned for striking, shield bashing, parrying, and initiating executions. The movement and fluidity wasn't quite as clunky as I had anticipated, but it was by no means smooth. It felt nothing more than serviceable.

One of the most eyebrow-raising aspects from the press conference was the amount of supposed quicktime events in the game. The developers took particular care to explain to me that these weren't true quicktime events, but rather an execution that was entirely optional and helped the player progress. A failed execution has no consequence, but a successful one comes with perks such as added health.

Despite their insistence, they were totally quicktime events. Worse yet, their inclusion (complete with the contextual buttons) was a constant blemish on an otherwise beautiful game. Each time an execution was begun, it focused the camera on that particular unfortunate subject, completely ignoring any other enemies that had been engaged. It's a situation that we've seen enough, and has never been great.

Ryse also seems to be very unimaginative in its structure. The demo consistently bottlenecked the player into the next narrow setting to engage the enemies in a completely pre-determined way. Maybe this was just for the purpose of the demo, but it feels as if the game could utterly negate any freedom that the player has.

For what it's worth, Ryse looks great. It doesn't come as much of a surprise given that it runs onCryEngine 3. Crytek has a stunning game on its hands with regard to visuals, but graphics don't make a great game.

There probably isn't a whole lot of time before Ryse: Son of Rome makes its appearance on Xbox One. Hopefully something comes out soon to quell these problems. As is, there's not a whole lot to look forward to.

The facts mister op dude are that resolution doesn't show power. Its up to the developer to choose what looks best for the game.

people throw numbers around. Throw resolution around. Thankfully the industry has noticed with ryse its the end result that matters. Which is why ryse is getting so much visual praise. And that is with crytek getting xbox one code late. Imagine what is possible on xbox one if crytek had a proper length of dev time with xbox one?.

we will find out as the next ryse is based in old England. The knights. Hopefully the knights of the round table. That game will be 1080p native and look far superior to ryse son of Rome.

on a different nots. I hope 343 i halo 5 looks alot better than launch fps's. Because they look great but just not humph. Then again this is 343i. What they achieved with halo 4 was simply astounding.

I wonder how graphically killzone shadow fall would have looked if was developed/rendered @900p resolution.. But i guess Sony main agenda was to hit 1080p no matter what.. As for MS i guess it was to look on par or better from PS4 at whatever resolution it might be..

Enjoy..

Not many PC's out there are more powerful than these next gen systems. Can they be powerful absolutely. Most of them arent tho.

If Ryse looks better than Killone is highly subjective. But that Killzone has the higher resolution is completely objective. So objectively, Killzone wins.

But how about we wait until the games are here? And yes, of course Xbox games will look a little worse. The hardware is inferior, it is what it is. If you can't live with that, get a PS4, what's the problem? If you are fine with the Xbox One graphics, why bitch about it on the internet?

The games are completely up to you to judge. Everybody has his own taste, so you can't really discuss that. If you like the Xbox games, go ahead and get them, ain't nothing wrong with that. But the superior hardware of the PS4 is just a fact, you can't deny it and it won't change because of some secret sauce or 32 MB of eSRAM or something. And yes, it will translate to superior graphics. By what amount remains to be seen. But it really isn't a problem. We all have the choice! If you like Xbox games, get an Xbox. If you like PS games, get a PS4, simple as that. As for multiplatform games, they will be good enough on Xbox. If you happen to own both consoles, get them for PS4. They will be better, just deal with it, it's not the end of the world. I lived with it for almost the entire 7th gen! And in that case, the PS3 was even stronger on paper! In Xbox Ones case, at least you have a perfect excuse why third party titles lack graphics or resolution or something.

I mean, serioously, get over it. Is anyone really expecting the systems to be on par? The GPU is the most important part of the consoles and it's considerably faster on the PS4, end of story. Stupid things like RAM and CPU don't even matter that much. I mean, just try to upgrade the RAM in your PC from 8 GB to 16 GB. You won't notice any difference at all! Same for CPU, if you happen to have a decent CPU, a high end model won't do jack shit without the right GPU. Maybe fps increase by 2-3 % if you change an i5 for an i7 or something. But how about changing your Radeon 7770 for a Radeon 7850. You are going to notice that in games A LOT.

Just let it go, seriously, it's getting ridiculous. Graphics are not everything, but the PS4 is the most powerful console. I can't hear it anymore, even misterxmedia shut up by now!

:P
