Forums - Nintendo - A reminder about how much *** the 3DS is kicking in Japan

In 2011, only two games sold over a million copies in Japan.

In 2012, it was three games.

In 2013, there have already been FIVE, before the holiday season. If Luigi's Mansion 2 sells less than 0.1 million more during the holidays, there will be six.

And all six will be 3DS games.

From 2011 to 2013, 9 of the 10 single-year million-sellers have already been 3DS games

The only exception, Pokemon Black/White 2, was playable on the 3DS

Other fun facts

  • Over half of gaming hardware sold in Japan so far this year has been either a 3DS or 3DS XL.
  • All five of the best selling new games of 2013 are 3DS titles
  • So are the two best-selling titles from 2012
  • Millions of more units of 3DS software has been sold so far in 2013 than 360 software EVER in Japan
  • Seven of the top 100 best-selling games of all time in Japan are 3DS titles
  • The 3DS has outsold the Wii, the PS3, the N64 and GameCube combined, and worldwide Vita sales by over two to one.
  • In terms of software sales, the 3DS is already #11, despite its youth
  • Either Monster Hunter title on the 3DS alone outsells all Wii U games sold in Japan
  • The top 3 3DS games in Japan have outsold ALL Vita software in the country

Just thought that the system isn't getting enough praise for a leading system.

Now only if this would translate into its Western markets....

That sort of thing is always a bit hard to measure. Not only are markets different now than they were in the mid 2000's, what with digital retail games, the shrinking Japanese market, mobile devices, etc, but the DS and 3DS launched at different times of the year. Therefore, sometimes the DS is ahead simply because it launched right before the holidays and the 3DS launched soon after them, while the 3DS has ocassionally gotten ahead thanks to its various special circumstances, including a bigger holiday 2011 than the DS had in 2004.

The 3DS is about 2 or 3 million units behind where the DS was at this point in its life, in early 2007. However, the 3DS is likely to close thaat gap over the next three months, because its only now having its third holiday season, is getting its first Pokemon generation later than the DS did, and has more games coming out in late 2013 than the DS did in Spring 2007.

So, in short, the 3DS is slightly behind the DS in Japan for this part of its life. But mostly because the DS Lite was a beast in 2006.

One more thing: the DS actually slowed down in 2007. The 3DS is likely to do something similar, but the late releases of 2013's biggest hits will likely give it extra life, along with major 2014 titles such as Super Smash Bros, Kirby 3DS, Yoshi's New Island, etc.

Not that great. But the fact that the system can still dominate in such a way despite a gen over gen decline highlights how much in the toilet the rest of the market is.

@Salnax: What's this?

"The 3DS has outsold the Wii, the PS3, the N64 and GameCube combined, and worldwide Vita sales by over two to one."

What kind of messed up metric are you using for that fun fact? I guess Monster Hunter software sales.

In case I wasn't clear, it outsold the Wii in Japan, but just the Wii. It also outsold the PS3, but not the PS3 AND the Wii. I was just to lazy to list every platform in its own line.

Keep posting!  It gets a StarFighter strong buy too.  Some people say that's even more valuable than Zacks.

Luigi´s Mansion probably has already surpassed that mark, since we still don´t have the digital sales numbers
