I'm originally from Asia and I grew up watching Japanese animation more than American animation, guess what we called them both? Cartoons. Anime is a made up word that is making American people more stupid just like the word ain't, which both of those words I use depending on the situation. I'm not saying it's not valid, I'm just saying it's stupid since people just want to feel like they are fucking cool with a new word even though at the end, we are all nerds anyways.

I don't like using the word cartoon because of the connotation behind the word.  Definitely don't use the word "anime" to seem cool. lol

Think about it though, you don't like the connotation behind the word "cartoon" is pretty much why you use the word "anime," surely cartoon is more an uncool word for you to describe what you see as Japanese animation.

It doesn't have to do with being cool or uncool.  I don't mind watching something people tend to call cartoons.  However, I don't like people using a reductionist word and/or tone for something I'm watching that's actually more serious.  Cartoons definitely have the connotation of humor, comedy, "mindless violence" and all.  If it were up to me to choose how to call all of them, I'd just say they are all animations.

I think Anime in general is aimed at a more mature audience than Cartoons. That could just be me though.

Negative, there are a lot of Japanese animations aimed towards children, A LOT! The word anime is just a stupid catch phrase that people adapted to call Japanese animation cause they think French is so fucking kewl, but they are cartoons.

Well, in French, anime means cartoon so...

It comes from the word dessin anime, which literally means animated drawings.

While it may have originated in French because of the wording or the language, a big reason behind it was that anime was really popular in France, waaaaay before America was.

I remember watching cell eat android 17in France a full 7 years before it hit the states.

I've always felt like what really separates anime and cartoon is how the story is treated.

Example: Spongebob I feel safe to say is a cartoon
Avatar: The Last Airbender I do not.

Hunter x Hunter I feel safe to say is an anime
Gintama I do not

Most cartoons also use different means of expressing their emotions. Anime use more symbolic expressions while cartoons use more literal ones, it seems.

What would you call to name a few: Watership Down, Fire and Ice, Fantastic Planet, A Scanner Darkly in that case?

Anime is more oftenly used for mature stories but certainly doesn't have a monopoly on that.

Honestly I don't think I've watched any of those so I'm not sure what to call them except by name.

Yes, animes are cartoons.

Still, we make a difference because the style is different. It's not made the same way, it's a different culture, sometimes not the same public (not many western cartoons for the 18-25 )

simpsons, family guy, futurama, south park, there are more. many cartoons are also made for adults, or adults and kids.

Still not many. Mostly any otaku could come up with 15-25 names of anime for 18-25.

Also, all the cartoons you named are based on humor, there is also drama in anime (mostly josei for something good)

I generally do just call them animations lol. You also must have a different definition of the word "cool" compared to my understanding, though I doubt it. :P

I've watched 3 seasons of My Little Pony.  I don't think I do things because they're "cool." lol

Yes they are. I never thought people actually considered them anything else. Do the Japanese call animes anime???

News Flash! Mangas are comics!

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I wouldn't consider anime any more cartoons than I would consider a Disney animated film like the Lion King to be a cartoon.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
