Its because of Brazilian taxes. Its the same reason I couldnt sell expensive items to them when they came to my hometown and were looking around at items. They had to be almost rich to barely be able to afford it. Most could pay out of pocket but when they tallied the taxes it hurt them terribly to have to leave their items behind.

Yep, me and Ethomaz worked as extras on Max Payne 3, they never payed us...
Holy cow! And I thought we had it bad in the Philippines. That is just an insane price.

Haha.... probably more then I have spent on the PS3. (personally)

Even here in a bordering on irrelevant market PS4 is $100 cheaper (which should actually be $120 cheaper if one was to simply look at exchange rates, but complaining about that in this particular thread would be petty in the extreme, so I will just leave it as an observation). Normally a market distortion of this magnitude would be principally down to import tariffs. What I can't figure out is why Xb one is cheaper, could it be that US electronics have lower trariff rates than electronics that come from outside of the Americas, or some such thing? Though differential tariffs based on origin could breach WTO rules. In theory a country has to be equal opportunity protectionist, however WTO rules allow for special deals via FTAs or regional trade agreements. But we all know a lot of countries say they play to WTO rules but actually secretly give the middle finger to the rules when it suits because it has to be a really big deal for a country to want to go to the fuss and expence of entering into a disputes resolution process under WTO. Until otherwise proven I'm putting the blame on import tariffs. For at least 95% of the price difference. But Brazilians will keep on electing governments that do that sort of thing, so they get the tariffs they deserve. |
Nope. Import rates are the same. When Nintendo was oficially represented over here, the Gamecube was imported for BRL 1,200, which ammounted to USD 400 at the time. In theory the twice as expensive PS4 wouldn't go for more than USD 800 even if the market exchange rates were unfavourable as back then. Even if they weren't, both consoles are manufactured on China anyways, and Sony could oficcialy import from SCEA, for instance.
Tax law is a very important thing for large companies, even more so here in Brazil. It is unlikely Sony or anyone else would do anything without the proper legal assistance as to import for the lowest taxes available.
The taxes are called II, PIS, COFINS, IPI and ICMS. Put together at their highest values they would place the PS4 around USD 828 - and I belive the end result would be lower, seeing the price the X1 is retailing. You just don't know what a bunch of assholes Sony Brazil are. This is not the first time they pull something like this.

Well I won't argue on the tax thing. But I don't believe it's arseholism that takes RRP in USA $100 cheaper and turns it into $800US more expensive in Brazil. Shit, if Sony pulled that here in New Zealand out of arseholism I'd buy an Xb one and a Wii U just to spite them. I can't believe Sony would be so self defeating as to have such a huge price disparity for a console that's meant to be cheaper than its primary competition.

The only plausible explanation is that they're using poor Ethomaz as an unwitting guinea pig for a socio-anthropo-economic experiment: they want to see how much they can charge him before he gets pissed as a wasp towards Sony and he becomes a Sony hater!

The market over here have been operating on insane practices for centuries now. The drive pushing prices up is stronger than any beneficial effect market competition could have. Some market segments seemed to be getting over it, at least partly, but Sony pushed the envelope this time around. Just so you can compare, for 5% more you can buy an USD 1000 MacBook Air from Apple Brazil. They are literally some 100% above the rest of the market. One major news sites even run an entire news interviewing economists and market analysts who were unanimous on pointing out there is no reasonable explanation.
They even took the crown from the non-official Wii launch who was USD 1050 for a month before dropping to USD 600 and frankly I thought it was impossible. Either way, I'm sure the price is coming down not long after launch. It has to. But Sony's reputation over here is already stained. It's easy to notice on any comments section or even the official facebook page of Sony Brazil which has some hilarious comments.
