In theory a country has to be equal opportunity protectionist, however WTO rules allow for special deals via FTAs or regional trade agreements. But we all know a lot of countries say they play to WTO rules but actually secretly give the middle finger to the rules when it suits because it has to be a really big deal for a country to want to go to the fuss and expence of entering into a disputes resolution process under WTO. Until otherwise proven I'm putting the blame on import tariffs. For at least 95% of the price difference. But Brazilians will keep on electing governments that do that sort of thing, so they get the tariffs they deserve. |
Nope. Import rates are the same. When Nintendo was oficially represented over here, the Gamecube was imported for BRL 1,200, which ammounted to USD 400 at the time. In theory the twice as expensive PS4 wouldn't go for more than USD 800 even if the market exchange rates were unfavourable as back then. Even if they weren't, both consoles are manufactured on China anyways, and Sony could oficcialy import from SCEA, for instance.
Tax law is a very important thing for large companies, even more so here in Brazil. It is unlikely Sony or anyone else would do anything without the proper legal assistance as to import for the lowest taxes available.
The taxes are called II, PIS, COFINS, IPI and ICMS. Put together at their highest values they would place the PS4 around USD 828 - and I belive the end result would be lower, seeing the price the X1 is retailing. You just don't know what a bunch of assholes Sony Brazil are. This is not the first time they pull something like this.
