Forums - Gaming - Why are people so obsessed with console hardware?

Then why did you spend more than half of your op talking about how the difference isn't big?

To specifically emphasize that even if it is big, it doesn't matter. Whatever the difference between the consoles, there are more important things to worry about. My example of the PS2 vs. Xbox illustrates that even if you have the better hardware, it doesn't mean you have the better console.

Um that logic doesn't compute. Your argument in the op and most of the thread is that the difference is too small to matter. Bolded it for you:

"For PC hardware, I can understand specifically because PC game graphics are adjustable depending on your hardware capabilities. But console games don't have that feature. Therefore, developers will be making games that are optimized for a specified set of hardware parameters.

Thus, in the case of the PS4 and the Xbone, where the differences are so small (if any), what's the point of arguing which one is better? The difference isn't like Geforce 1st gen and 4th gen. It's the same hardware generation, with relatively the same specs, so developers will be optimizing their games in relatively the same fashion. Will you really care and notice if a version of a game runs at 60fps, while the other one runs at 59fps? It's ludicrous.

I don't understand why people are arguing about this all the time. Instead, people should argue about the games, on which console will get the better exclusives or the better first party support or the better online features."

Then in your first reply to me:

"The point is, the consoles aren't even out yet and you don't know that. For all you know, there could be no difference at all. And either way, developers are focusing on both consoles so it's pointless to speculate."

Then you posted:

"Some devs like the PS4 more, some devs like the Xbone more. And your point is?

Of course Sony will claim to be better. That's marketing 101."

May you please underline in these posts of yours which parts are meaning "even if [the difference] it is big, it doesn't matter?"

You're taking my posts WAAAY out of context. I said those things in reply to what others have said.

The point of everything in this thread is that, big or small, difference or no difference in hardware, IT DOESN'T MATTER. That's all I want to say, which is why the thread title says "why are people so obsessed with console hardware". I wrote that simply because I don't think it's necessary to obsess about it.

First off, if anything I'm finding the power difference between the PS4, One, and Wii U pretty ridiculous considering the PS4 and One are releasing at the exact same time, and the Wii U was just one year earlier.

But that said, it sucks pretty badly when you get a great exclusive stuck on crappy hardware, and this time around, ALL the hardware is pretty crappy...

So what if it's more powerful? It's not like the difference is a generation away. Think PS2 vs. Xbox. Which one had the better games? Which one received better support from developers? Those things are the more important aspects that people should worry about.

It's pretty simple.  More powerful means more potential.  Better FPS means better gaming experience. Better resolution means better gaming experience.  Better hardware, should mean better ability for developers to create better exclusive software.  I'd argue in a 'Closed' system environment, specs matter even more than ever because of the limited mobility.

PS2 - Xbox is a bad comparison because PS2 was out for far longer than Xbox and had already secured a number of exclusives and built up a library.   Still a game like Halo simply wasn't possible on PS2 and it is exactly what built the Microsoft brand from nothing to something.

The difference will be much greater than 1 fps, that's why people keep arguing.

No, the primary reason for arguing is one box says Sony and the other says Xbox.

As of right now, we aren't seeing a significant difference between the two machines. Down the road, I imagine the biggest advantage we'll see on PS4 is performence and not so much graphics.
