You act like there are no other Japanese games for the PS3.

Good for SSBB. Good for DMC4. I'm not a fan of either game, but they did a good job.
I predict many long hours of SSBB with my friends. DMC4 is awsome. Both games deserve to sell a lot :)

If we are going to start like this:
DMC2 released in 2003 also in February in Japan on PS2 with a userbase of 11 million PS2's.
While DMC4 released on a userbase of not yet 2 million PS3's
The game was the only new released game that week and sold in his lifetime around 500 K in Japan.
While DCM4 is released in a week with a lot of competitors and probably will have lifetime sales around 350-400k.
In my opinion it is impressive that DMC4 haves sales like that ...The only thing that I didn't checked (I am to lazy) what other games have released those months on PS2.

^^ DMC3 was released on a much bigger install base than DMC2 - and sales were down? Install base has little to do with it!
I also believe that DMC3 + DMC3 Special Edition were released at the same time - so when you combine the sales (as they should be) - the numbers are tracking spot on DMC4 - PS3 sales anyway.
Regardless, its a solid performance for DMC4 (I think anyway!).

DMC3 special edition released like two weeks ago and it sold in his lifetime 8k....
http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php It is number 49 ..
And install base has nothing to do with it?
Tell me then why are people thinking:
A higher installbase =>Games will sell more than a lower install base..

Here is a comparison between Brawl & NSMB:
http://vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=Japan&game1=New+Super+Mario+Bros+-+DS®2=Japan&game2=Super+Smash+Bros+Brawl+-+Wii®3=Japan&game3=&weeks=100
Brawl is tracking about 10% lower over two weeks (approx). I think it may end up in the 3m selling vicinity.
Be interesting to revisit this comparison in the coming weeks - if it manages to even half keep up with NSMB - its doing a great job!

No - that's the re-release - I mean this one (50k sales) - launched about a year later from the looks of it:
http://www.vgchartz.com/japweekly.php?date=38774
http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=3087
... I think it didn't come out when DMC3 did though - so it shouldn't be included in the overall sales.
...
Re: install base - do some research. You look at the big games, and tell me which of them sold MORE on a larger install base - than the prequel, that was launched on a smaller install base?
GT3 > GT4
EG3 > EG4
FFX > FXII
DMC > DMC2 > DMC3
MGS2 > MGS3
Mario Party games, etc...
...
All the evidence says that (in general) sequels sell less than prequels - even though the install base is much higher.

I don't know shams... Melee only did 1.4 million or close to that on a userbase of 4 million. 3 million I think might be pushing it. I'd say closer to 2... maybe in the very long run, but not within the next few weeks for sure. Or I may be crazy. Melee sold the majority of its units in the first few weeks, though of course the GC was a dead bird in Japan, so it didn't really have the expanding userbase to support long legs. We'll have to see.
Edit: when I say "in the long run" i was referring to brawl getting to 3 million, not my prediction of 2 million. Brawl should hit 2 million by the end of the year at least. I hope.
