You have to learn how to move with the times. If theres enough demand i would be sure Nintendo would make a 2D one aswell, but looking at pre-order numbers, this is the right way.

We know for sure it has a physical moveset (shown moves like Bite, Seed Bomb, Needle Arm, etc.)

I see him fulfilling the same role as Torterra.  Either being a bulky Choice Band user and (if he gets a reliable recovery move like Synthesis) as a Tank (anti-Rock, Steel, and Ground).  Spikey Sheild is like protect but actually damages the oppenant if its a physical contact move so that's cool.
