Forums - Sony - I own all the current systems. My biggest problem with the PS3 is.....

Agree, luckily Sony has fixed that issue with PS4, as it was one of their focuses to make updating more streamlined and less intrusive.

Sony made mistakes with the PS3's core design.

How has Sony fixed this issue? As far as we know, they haven't fixed it. We won't know until after the PS4 is released. The only way they can fix this issue is by boosting their download servers and bandwidth. It is not a matter of design at all.

Yes, they now allow a lot of updates to be handled in the background or to be done automatically at late night times (does this require PS+?), but that does not fix the fact that there will still be mandatory updates blocking you from playing newly purchased games until after you have them downloaded, and those downloads may or may not be any faster than the slow PS3 downloads.

Having to sync your trophies after you earn them to you account is also somewhat annoying and lets not forget that you have to instal everything after you download it.

I found a solution. When this issue happens, wait for it....go do something else. It's easy, its wonderful and it helps time go by faster. You can thank me later.

Jesus. God forbid nightsurge had disgreed with OP's post.

Umm Sony said they knew it was an issue before it launched, and they were chaning it for PS4.....I'll trust Sony's words over you, but keep fighting to try to make the PS4 look bad. Sony themselves said it was a core design issue that would not be fixed until the PS4...

Also, with auto updates its pretty moot at this point anyway.

The ridiculous mandatory software updates.  Every time I get a new game (new to me in some cases) I sit down wanting to try the game out only to find that there is a 500MB-1GB update that has to be downloaded first.  I love to play video games, not stare at an update screen for 30 minutes.  I own a lot of PS3 games, Wii games, Wii U games and Xbox 360 games.  The PS3 updates are by far the worse of all of them.

Not being a huge fan of Gran Turismo, I just picked up a used copy of GT5 and thought I’d give it a try....instead I’m sitting here waiting for a 608MB update to download and install.  I’ve timed some of these in the past and have had to wait well in excess of an hour to download and install the game updates on the PS3.  I’m now starting to understand how Sony supporters have so much time to post comments in the forums.

What kind of font is that?

The worst part is, Sony makes you pay for the automatic-updates service. Just boot you console and test run it the day before you play. Or sell it.

Well apparently they give it to you for free now....

It's nice that M$ gives you these options for free, oh wait....

You mean background downloading or downloading with the console turned off?  The do give you that for free.  No need to wait at all.

The feature where it turns itself on in the middle of the night to download updates. it used to be + exclusive and now isn't. The 360 did downloads while off, but not automatic patching

In 360's defense, updated/patches only took 4 seconds anyway.  Still, if Sony has solved the problem for free, I'm not complaining.

I'm just going to link you to another post of yours as proof that what I said above, you also acknowledge. We won't know if real issue was fixed or not until after launch.

And as I said, auto updates can't fix the issue of mandatory updates for newly purchased games. I'm not fighting to try and do anything about the PS4, but it appears I struck a nerve somehow. Don't be so emotionally attached to a console,  bud!

...

game updates are voluntary, if it says you can update you always have the option to press "no" and play the game without updating (ofc online mode is not available in that case)

Precisely. I assume that they have simply invested in servers more than Sony. Sony's solution only works for follow up patches after day 1, having good servers is all round better..... Which is why I hope Sony spends the extra money on PS+  on servers to speed these sorts of things up
