The aggression from Nintendo fans in thread is just ridiculous and humiliating. These are just numbers, bear with them.

Pity Zelda is doing this bad, I guess the first real system seller for Wii U is gonna be Mario Kart U.

Aggression? What thread have you been reading??? This thread is anything but aggressive...

Posting something negative is quite often labelled as hating, even if it's true. Almost every other post (from Nintendo fans) dismisses the thread in some other manner (wait for Famitsu, zelda sells more in America, sales more important than ranking etc.)

Hm, those must have slipped past me. Still, 4 out of over 30 isn't "ridiculous and humiliating" aggression. 1 out of 5 are ALWAYS idiots. He overexaggerated as much as they did.

Zelda has always been more popular in the west than in Japan. As far as I know not a single game in the franchise have sold more in Japan than in NA (not even close I think). So people trying to use this in a negative way don't really have any grounds to do so. Add to all that that is a HD remake and Wii U's install base and this sales (whatever they are) are perfectly normal.

I... am not sure I quite understand this line of argument.

Yes, Zelda sells more in NA in Japan.  I don't think anyone is disputing that.  But we're looking at a Japanese retailer sales chart?

Within Japan, however, Zelda often outsells the Kiseki games (by quite some margin - Skyward Sword sold almost 2x the best selling LoH games).  Even FW sales were ~60k higher than Ao no Kiseki; and ~120k higher than Zero no Kiseki.

But sure, HD remake rather than a new game which Sen no Kiseki is.  So what about Warriors Orochi?  That's a mere enhanced port of a game which released 2 years ago.  And again, the Zelda series in Japan has always sold better than the Orochi games; especially since both have been on the decline recently.

But PS3 userbase vs. Wii-U userbase, right?  Again, a valid point.  So what about the Vita version of Warriors Orochi, selling on a much similar userbase?

Of course, we're going to have to wait for Media Create & Famitsu to back up any numbers we see here.  I expect they won't mirror the exact order on Tsutaya.  But I just don't think the Zelda-in-Japan situation is as dire as people are making out.  I'm sure it will sell better in the USA - I'm not questioning that.  But we're looking at Japanese sales here, and can even draw some nifty comparisons to the other games in the chart.

I'm really not seeing the aggression you are talking about. I see people pointing out its just a prediction from one store and others pointing out it doesnt sell well in Japan. Not sure how that translates into aggression other than its what you want to see.

What is amusing is how people like you are taking it as a fact when its not, just because it says what you want to see.

NA is also a much larger market than Japan so that is an unfair comparison. It's probably more true to say that Zelda is about as (relatively) big in Japan as NA. Usually there is a large difference in install bases as well, but this time WiiU has sold almost the same amount in japan as in USA, so the difference won't be as big as before.

Let's look at 3 of the best selling Zelda games. Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and the original NES one.

First OoT:

  • N64 install base in NA: 20.11m
  • OoT copies sold in NA: 4.10m
  • Attach rate of ~ 0.20
  • N64 install base in Japan: 5.54m
  • OoT copies sold in Japan: 1.45m
  • Attach rate of ~0.26

Second Twilight Princess:

  • Wii install base in NA: 44.85m
  • TP copies sold in NA: 3.60m
  • Attach rate of ~ 0.080
  • Wii install base in Japan: 12.74m
  • TP copies sold in Japan: 0.60m
  • Attach rate of ~ 0.047

Third Legend of Zelda NES:

  • NES install base in NA: 33.49m
  • LoZ copies sold in NA: 3.74m
  • Attach rate of ~ 0.11
  • NES install base in Japan: 19.35m
  • LoZ copies sold in Japan: 1.69m
  • Attach rate of ~ 0.08

As you can see only Ocarina of Time had a bigger attach ratio in Japan than NA, the other games have a smaller one in Japan. The rest are probably the same, maybe the handheld ones have a bigger attach ratio in Japan considering the handhelds popularity.

I did more after that post, Wind Waker has a bigger attach ratio in Japan (0.22 vs 0.20). I also did the handheld games and surprisingly Phantom Hourglass has a bigger attach ratio in NA than Japan (0.031 vs 0.028). I'm too lazy to do all Zelda games but if the pattern stays the same, is obvious too see that considering the market difference, Zelda is more popular in NA than Japan (in most cases).

A bit disappointing, but not a major surprise. Good week for new releases on Sony systems though.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
