Forums - Gaming - Eurogamer Expo Impressions

OK, so Eurogamer Expo 2013 started yesterday in the UK and we're already hearing some interesting stuff from the devs. I was just there today and thought I'd create a thread for people to post their impressions and news (both attendees and internet followers).

So for me personally (wall o' text incoming):

Occulus Rift- This really needs to be tried and seen to be believed. I played War Thunder first on PS4, then on a PC using Occulus Rift and it is feels like a completely different experience. I was immediately looking around the cockpit to try and spot my next target. The only downside is that it might be a bit too immersive! One guy nearly fell off his chair looking around and I felt a little dizzy immediately after taking off the headset.

PS4- I got a decent amount of time considering the queue. Killzone: ShadowFall is visually the most impressive of the next gen games I saw (comes close to Crysis on a decent PC), had none of the lag normally associated with the franchise and had a decent multiplayer setup. DriveClub has nice lighting and environments and plays a bit like Grid (in the middle of arcade and sim). The demo really emphasised the social side and how that'll be implemented. Last game I played was War Thunder... well see my comment above.

The console itself is slick but more importantly, the controller is a huge step up from the DS3. It's ergonomic, the triggers are a significant improvement over the bumpers on DS3 and the grip on the analog sticks (and the controller in general) is very comfortable.

Xone- Only got to play Forza 5 so I don't have as much to say about it compared to PS4. Forza itself... well, it looks and plays like a Forza. It's visually nice if not extraordinary (although the cars look pristine) but the demo didn't show off anything particularly new. The biggest draw for me was the controller. Having different rumble in each trigger is a definite plus and Forza makes good use of it. It actually makes driving with the controller easier as you have that extra level of feedback.

Other games:

Gran Turismo 6- Like Forza, if you've played the latest Academy, you know how this will play, however the demo included AI drivers... who drive like other GT AI drivers. A shame, but there we are. Physics is definitlely improved and I was more impressed with the visuals on GT6 than either Forza or Drive Club (when taking into account the aging hardware of course). It's amazing they've managed to make it look as good as it does.

Assassins Creed: Black Flag- Played the PC version which actually worked quite well after I got used to the weird keyboard they had. The naval combat is fun and the overall combat is similar to ACIII. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this. It's difficult to say based on the little I played, but I think this should top ACIII (although that shouldn't be too difficult).

Beyond: Two Souls- I played enough to confirm I'm going to get it on release

TitanFall- I didn't get to play this but they had the PC version on show and it looked a lot of fun, however I overheard a dev talking to the PR guy on the stand and he confirmed it was running on Source engine.

The dev seemed surprised by this considering the visuals and the difficulty in modifying the engine (compared to Frostbite and Cryengine). He also went on to say that Source was a difficult engine to port, so this could partly be why it's not coming to PS4 just yet (plus whatever business dealings occured ).

Also, if anyone got a chance to play Elder Scrolls: Online, I'd really like to hear how that plays. The queue was really long... and then someone fainted on their way to play so I went to play something else

Nice write up Scoobes

Great to hear a lot of positives about all the up comming games and especially the new consoles. Your PS4 bit makes me excited! I especially like the fact that GG has decided to remove the latency in the game...ive always felt that that held the game back somewhat.

Also good to hear about the PS4 controller being a step up.

Things im hoping for in next gen is a truly seamless gaming experience, great visuals and low latency/snappy performance all round.

Tagging for some impressions! Good read Scoobes, can't wait for November 29th...

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Thanks, I wish I could have given more info though!

The event has really grown in the last few years. I wish I was going for two days because there was still loads of stuff I wanted to try out (Battlefield 4, Elder Scrolls Online, numerous Indie titles etc.).

Thanks I think GT6 will surprise a lot of guys this year... it have worst graphics but for a current-gen game it is looking amazing.

If PD can put the MotoGP feature ready for the launch... it will become the best choice between the three.

How would you compare GT6 to the two next gen racers? Does it hold up well?

Or were you just impressed with what was achieved on very old hardware?

Once thing GT has in its favour is the high resolution it runs at...its almost at full 1080p. Thats amazing.

I was thinking about this part... I don't know I get used to the lag... I think I will fell weird.

Haha same here. I actually liked the "heavier" feel of Killzones. Shadow Fall seems to be a big change. Gameplay, mechanics, scope, design all seem to be highly changed since 2&3 and I'm actually less and less inclined to buy it until a price drop, or if a demo will blow me away.

Greatness Awaits!

You actually got to play some games! I did lots of queueing....

But anyway, my first taste of PS4 was Black Flag, which was great fun being able to do what I wanted, definitely a game I am going to spend a good amount of time with to work out what is going on.

After that, I queued for forever to get into the Sony booth, then played Resogun. It is basically SuperStardust HD but sideways. Maybe not as good, but definitely free with PS+. I died fairly quickly, so move on to Killzone.... Oh wait there was almost another hour queueing for that

When I did get to play Killzone (running off dev kits) I was amazed in many ways. Firstly, the graphics are just stunning, I was so impressed by them. The main thing that amazed me was how terrible everyone else was, I got 2 10 kill streaks and finished with 3x the points of anyone else there... Something was probably broken

I did try War Thunder for about 2 seconds, but the controls didn't make any sense, so I moved on

I played a bit of FFX HD which had a poorly chosen demo and not too impressive performance, but I'll still buy it

With only like an hour to go now, I wanted to try out an Xbox One game, so I played my brother at FIFA since that didn't have a particularly long line. It was a noticeable step up from current gen games, but I wasn't impressed by the controller (though the rumble triggers weren't being used)

With 15 minutes to go, I got some time on Need for Speed Rivals, which was also good fun

So in summary, I spent so much time queuing, its not something I would repeat in the future, I missed out on Titanfall and the Oculus Rift because I couldn't be bothered to spend even more time queuing. I was very impressed with the DualShock 4 and Killzone in particular, but shame I didn't get to try more games
