Forums - Nintendo - supporting evidence that Wii U main issue is software

There has been plenty of discussion about why Wii U Is selling poorly. Some think its price, marketing, gamepad, weak hardware, casuals leaving, etc. Some of these may be a factor but I believe the biggest issue is software. Im not saying Wii U has no games but it lacks the games that made Wii a success.

http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/2/wii/

The top 20 best selling games on Wii sold over 350m combined or roughly 40% of total Wii software. Its safe to say the main reason to own a Wii was due to these games. These 20 games consist of 14 different series. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Party, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Mario & Sonic Olympics, Just Dance, Zumba Fitness, Mario Party.

Of these 14 series only 2 are currently on Wii U, they are Just Dance and 2D Mario. In the next 3 months 7 more will be released (3D Mario, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Party, Zumba Fitness, Mario & Sonic Olympics) and 2 more are confirmed for 2014 (Mario Kart, Smash Bros) with the remaining 3 possible for 2014 (Zelda, Wii Play, Mario Party).

If Wii U is still selling poorly after the majority of these games release then it is safe to say its problems lie elsewhere but until then im conviced software is Wii Us main issue.

If only Nintendo waited to launch this year...they would have destroyed the X1 and PS4 with their exclusive launch line up.

And water is wet .

But then if only Sony delayed the PS4 to next year, they could destroy the competition with their exclusive lineup!

Your probably right, I think Nintendo wanted a good head start and were probably hoping for around 10million+ consoles sold before the PS4/Xbone launched.

DUUHH!!
Now seriously, the best example is Pikmin 3. It 's not a system seller, yet it made the Wii U go from 7K (I think, not sure) to 22K in Japan.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

If they did that, then Nintendo would have had virtually no console momentum from early 2011 to late 2013. At least the Wii U launch helped Nintendo's fortunes for a month and a half. And at least it got publishers like Ubisoft and Warner Bros more comfy supporting Nintendo consoles.

That said, I'm interested in what the Wii U would have looked like had it been delayed a year. Would it have launched at $300 with a game? Would it still have cost $350, but be more powerful? Would the system launch with Wind Waker HD, NSMBU, Wii Party U, and Wii Fit U, giving it a great initial first party and casual lineup?

Alternatively, what if Nintendo did the opposite, and released the Wii U in late 2011 at $400? With, say, Skyward Sword in HD as the star of the launch? It would likely get more third party support in 2012 and 2013, but would hurt Wii sales. Not to mention the software drought would have been nearly two years long, ala PS360, except with no 3rd parties to help out.

They might still make it before the launch is complete, especially with Japan only getting the PS4 in late February. Honestly, a couple of very good weeks during the holidays can accomplish half of this.

that sentence makes no sense. they will destroy X1 and ps4 with those exclusives. releasing at the same time would be a disadvantage.
