Exactly how the title says, is it really fair? I mean a great example of this is luigi mansion. Dont get me wrong the game is fun as hell but lets face it, if luigi wasnt on the cover it wouldn't have half the sales i believe.

If W101 had been a group of Nintendo Characters it would of sold off the charts!

What do you think? Which games that flopped shouldn't have? (all platforms)

PS All Stars Battle Royale.   Proof the gameplay isn't why people buy SSB.

thats not the reason, people complaint cuz of either Character Roster was weak (nowhere near full potential) or cuz it was a SSB rip off.

No readily identifiable mascot or main character.

There you go. That's a necessity for platformers or games that target a younger audience. Pokemon would never have been as big without Pikachu being plastered everywhere. Sony actually tried very hard to make Sackboy identifiable and it paid off.

You want your new cartoon-style IP to take off?  Make sure you have a unique character, make sure you give that character a brandable name, and make sure you say that name over and over and over in your media.  In effect, give your IP a name and a face for people to associate your game with, which gives it a personality.  I said the same thing with Pikmin, that it would have sold much better if it had a Pikachu character or if the leader was given a memorable name and personality and promoted heavily.

If those games are going to sell then it's up to the publishers to make them sell.
I still don't see why people are all over new IP's, well at least it's on the forums.

3DS Friend Code: 4553 - 9954 - 4854. Name - David

i would have bought the puppeteer but i spent my money on gta5. plus im not looking to really buy for soon to be last gen of consoles. Maybe with BC but not without it. the timing just sucks.

and we all know the wiiu's issue, no need to go there.

Even though your right about pikachubeing everywhere, i disagree on pikachu is wat made pokemon big, it has 30mil+ for its first game and had nothing to do with pikachu and thats when pokemon was at its best. Pikachu though after the anime + yellow edition is wat made him most recognized character in the franchise, thus making him the face of the biggest handheld series

Edit: I meant was if pikachu wasnt the popular pokemon somebody else would have been instead, meaning pokemon is this huge cuz of pokemon, not pikachu

When Wonderful 101 started flopping, I was happy on the inside. Finally, Nintendo is in a place with consoles that my PS3 and Sony started out last gen. Then Puppateer and Killzone flopped, and I thought to myself why? These are great games?!! What's wrong with people....

In the end I was being a hypocrite. Gamers unite and mourn these amazing games that don't sell because of brand. It's a shame.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

This is how the entire entertainment industry works. Why do you think there are so many spinoffs, sequels and reboots in movies and comics and such? Having a known quantity people are aware of makes it easier to sell.

And the fact is, the game's marketing from Nintendo has been hot garbage. Indeed, the whole system's rollout and post-release marketing efforts have been utter dogshit compared to the Wii. It makes no sense to me that Nintendo isn't being nearly as aggressive about pushing their new console as the last one, when motion control was so much easier to promote. They need to be doing a lot more to convince people that the Gamepad is worth the asking price.

Instead, the system is such a non-factor that you have casual buyers who don't even know it's a new system to begin with. As long as that's the case new games outside of their core franchises are going to do much.

If the World Ends With You was called Final Fantasy it would have sold millions, and would be a 90+ rated game. The world sucks, deal with it.

I hated that game, I gave it a good try because of the reviews, but I just couldn't stand it. However I think I'm a minority, or maybe its gameplay just appeals to a niche audience.

XenoBlade and Lost Odyssey are my two examples. Lost Odyssey is from the creator of Final Fantasy, and IMO it's much better then FFX, FFXII and FFXIII (not sure about PS1 classics, they are still on my TDL). Had it been called FFXIII instead of FFXIII it would have sold millions.

XenoBlade is much the same, had it been called Dragon Quest X, 5 million copies done.

Also I want to give a shout out to Front Mission DS. Only sold 10,000 units in North America, but it's the best SRPG I have ever played. Not really that similar to FFTA or Fire Emblem, so I dunno what name would have made this gem sell.

Xenoblade was successful^.would have been even more had it not had limited stock.
