Hmmm. Looks like i will have a duel boot setup soon. I tried unbuntu along time ago, the only reason i gave up on it was it was a pain in the ass to run most games, and netflix needs silverlight and that just wouldnt work.

I hope this takes off and becomes more mainstream, i really dont ever want to buy another windows os again.

So if I have a windows or mac, I need to install a new OS? Or does it run like virtual machine ?

Regarding PCs, you can have more than one OS installed at the same time. But, yes SteamOS will have to be installed.

Linux has fare more drivers built in then all windows + all macs combined. My linux supports all hardware out of the box on my Sony Vaio.

No drivers problem here. In addition - steam needs only ATI/Nvidia drivers. I think they can handle this.

I know but this doesn't change the problem with *new* hardware. Sure, it's nice to have driver support for old hardware but especially new (gaming) hardware is a problem. Like with every other Linux out there. This doesn't change if it works for me and you.

It reminds me of when Google announced Android back in 2007. Everyone was expecting them to announce a new phone to compete with Apple, but instead they presented the OS that today controls around 80% of its market.

This is also more significant and ambitious than a single video game console. Now I'm sure they will release multiple versions of the Steam Box in the coming years, just like Google does with the Nexus.

And you know what the best part is? It's free! Which means that other manufacturers like Alienware, Asus and MSI will sell their gaming PCs at a much lower cost!

Well that was unexpected.

I use my PC for much more than gaming, and as a programmer I simple can't get rid of Windows. So this is out of the question as a stand alone OS for me. Might install it as a secondary OS depending on the impressions. 

I strongly think this excellent announcement is a precursor for an announcement about an actual console release with this OS on it.
