Forums - Sony - How the PlayStation Eye connects your hands and voice to the PlayStation 4

Don't care for the eyes, but will probably purchase it just for novelty.

One advantage that I believe MS has in this area is that they have built the X1 with Kinect as the means of doing voice navigation. The X1 has dedicated audio hardware chips to do all that processing without out taxing the CPU. From what we have seen so far for the PS4, Sony does not have this type of setup. This could mean that the CPU would need to do a lot of work and if this is done in game could have an effect on performance.

Another area that MS has a head-start is in the voice recognition. MS has been doing this for a long time even before you toss in Kinect. Voice recognition is a touchy technology when you do international and even local with a lot of different accents.

I believe there will definitely be things the PSeye will be able to do because it has a camera and Audio chip array like Kinect. Without the depth sensor, true mapping of body and environments will not be something it can do. The PSeye will be very dependent on lighting within your home which I can tell you from my experience is something that breaks both the PSeye and the first Kinect.

It should be interesting to see what Sony does with the 2 cameras. Will we see some 3D type of camera features. I am hoping for something unique to get me to purchase the PSeye again.

PS4 also has dedicated Audio unit for processing along with chip for background processing which can also be used for this.

Digital Foundry: Is there dedicated audio processing hardware within the PlayStation 4? What can it do?

Mark Cerny: There's dedicated audio hardware. The principal thing that it does is that it compresses and decompresses audio streams, various formats. So some of that is for the games - you'll have many, many audio streams in MP3 or another format and the hardware will take care of that for you. Or, on the system side for example, audio chat - the compression and decompression of that.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

I was hoping for something more. Something to really challenge Microsoft.

It's nice that it will have face retention, although that is not one of my favorite techs, as it seems a bit fussy. A few commands, as in Skyrim for the Xbox 360 can be very helpful and expand gameplay.

And as @Machiavellian said, it will require lighting to work, and it will use the Main CPU to work, plus with it being optional, is a little like the Kinect for the 360. I was really hoping for something new I hadn't thought of yet.

Voice communication with your devices can be really handy. You used use to be able to talk to it and have it do things really nice to have. It's kind of like a cell phone, you never know how much you will use it until you have it.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

It's fine if they add some shortcuts with voice and face recognition, as long as the UI has been fully optimized for controller use. Voice recognition is not for me.

Is Move still supported on the ps4? My 4 year old is currently loving Puppeteer with the move. That light ball on the end of a stick with buttons. 4 year olds dream toy.

Yes PS3 Move controllers and Navi controller will work on PS4. Is only the DS3 that's been made obsolete for PS4, and for obvious reasons given DS4 has a a few features that DS3 doesn't.

You actually need to read that statement from Mark because the Shape Audio processors within the X1 does everything not just compress and decomresses audio stream.  Processing voice commands will not be handled by Sony audio hardware.  This is something that either the CPU or the GPU in  gpGPU mode will have to be used.  Later on Mark makes statements about using the gpGPU within the GPU processor for the PS4 on doing audio effects.

You know whats strange.  With the Move bundle in Europe and even with the PSeye for the PS4, there is no inclusion or even mention of the move controller and Nav.  I would think it would be an auto inclusion within the Move bundle but instead you get another PS4 controller.  Even the PSeye 4 is sold alone and not with the move.

That's fine as far as it goes, but the real advantage of Kinect is every Xb one will have one. So it doesn't matter what functionality Sony builds into the PS Eye it's small user base compared to total PS4 user base will always hold it back. Perhaps PS5 will have an Eye packed in from launch, though perhaps by then the next innovation in controls will be something different and Sony won't pack that in with every console either.

Well it's not on every next gen system, so why does it matter that Kinect's with every XBONE? Every multiplat still has PS4, PC, and Wii U that need a kinect free version of the game. No dev is going to spend much time making advanced XBONE features. At most you'll see things like head tracking, which will also be included in the PS4 and PC versions.

Just interested, why is voice not for you.  Do you have bad experience with voice commands or you just do not like talking to your devices.  The only reason I am asking is that I can see voice being much faster than picking up a controller and navigating to something instead of just saying "PS4 Play God of War".

I don't like talking to devices. (except cursing crashing pc programs)
I like browsing through my installed games, videos, etc
I'm soft spoken, voice recognition hardly ever works for me on the phone
I have kids making noise and it's trouble enough to keep the remote from them
I prefer the certainty and direct response that buttons give.

The only time I can see it being useful is when I know what I'm looking for in the online store and have to enter a search term without a keyboard currently attached. However I have about 5% faith in that working, as I'm not a native English speaker, have a slight accent and don't always know the correct pronunciation (to much hilarity of my wife) although I usually do know the correct spelling.

So not for me.

and still no one cares.
