5 million sold by March 2014 seems pretty reasonable to me. About 3 - 3.25 million up until the first week of January and then 2 - 1.75 sold during January - March.

bolded: selling more than wii without even counting japan sounds a little too impossible.

I disagree. There's a huge amount of hype surrounding the PS4. Couple that with the huge amount of pre-orders they have and they'll shouldn't have much of a problem selling that much.

At this point their biggest concern should be making enough consoles. They'll be selling the majority of PS4's they make this holiday season.

Care to elaborate with any reason. Mine is price and the fact that there is 2 retail games at launch that are new series that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Xbox has 1(possibly 2 if KI 3 is retail....and fighters arent that big of a genre). Its a hard sell to the masses. Even the hardcore gamers I know are waiting a while for the system, I see nothing of interest in either system except the Division(which I will likely get on PC). Anectodal evidence, but so is internet hype. PS3 is still releasing top tier exclusives and both systems are still getting big releases. I dont care about PS4 having a million preorders, Wii U had the same, and its a bomb ATM.

The big difference is the type of users when compared to Wii-u. Many Nintendo buyers are Nintendo fans, e.g they buy the console for Nintendo games alone. While Sony/MS are more general core users, i.e many might buy a next gen console for AC or Battlefield or COD and not because of any general love for one or two exclusive games that Sony/MS will have out at launch.

I have ordered - Killzone, Battlefield, WatchDogs and Assassins creed... why because if i am going to spend £40 on a game, it needs to be better than what i can currently get on my current gen console. You'll be surprised by how many people are like that. Of course I love Sony exclusives and that helps, but I know people getting a PS4 just for Assassins Creed or Watch Dogs alone. So don't think its all about exclusives, they certainly help and a Uncharted/Halo will push fans of those games to buy a console.

At the moment you will have a big number going to next gen, because they want the next gen experience, you will have some who are fans of Killzone/Dead Rising.... we have Infamous (which has a good core of users) who will upgrade in Feb, we have Japan coming online. There is bound to be more games spread out, but 3rd parties will certainly play a bigger part for MS/Sony than it did for the wii-u. Nintendo still don't know how to handle 3rd parties and it's user base doesnt on the whole seem to support 3rd parties.

Do i expect the PS4 to outsell Wii-u's lifetime by sometime next year... definately. Is there a chance MS might take a little longer but will still pass it... yep.

It's going to be an interesting year indeed.

Im shocked Sony would assume that in an unstable economy like this people have $500(system/game/psn/tax) to blow on a game console. Much less have $500 to blow on 1st gen hardware of a console with almost no games and the big games they have have similar experiences on current console(KZ,Infamous, multigen-plats). Shit if Sony sells 5 million by March, Id say XBOX sells 3 Million by then if people are that loose with their cash. I dont See X1 selling more than 1.5 by then or Sony more than 2.5.

PS3 did more than 2.5m at $600... PS4 is $400.

yeah, not sure why some people think it will be very hard to reach that goal. ps3 shipped easily  above 3m till end of march 2007 because vgc says sony sold 2.85m to customers and that with 200 bucks more and with the european release only one week before the end of march and no release in some other markets like mexico...  if ps3 shipped more than 3m with these circumstances and pre-orders probably 3x higher as for ps3 in some markets (well, not 100% sure but could be like that) i would be surprised if they wouldn't ship 5m as long as they can build them. i really expected that sony would say 7m shipped or something like that knowing that they have often too high expectations 7m would not even sound much for what they normally predict.

5m is pretty much the amount they know they can ship and if it will work well for them factories can maybe build even more.

i'm rather one of those guys who don't think that ps4 will sell so unbelievable good as some other think over the next 5 years because i still don't see a huge mass market appeal but i'm very certain that the first 5m will sell like hotcakes. with unbelievable good i mean something like 130m+.

I agree.

The PS4 hype that began in February was only because of MS and their blunders during their May reveal.

?? garbage, Sony doing everything right and the price were why. MS screwing up was icing on the cake. If Sony did a ps3 launhc it would haev been a diff story. amazing, how people try to not give sony any credit. total BS.

How can hype in february be because of what happened 3 months later? People were hyped about Ps4 day 1 before we even knew about MS Policies or the X1. Your post doesn't even make sense.

someone missed the irony here...

If Sony pulls this off this just shows that their brand power is coming back. I was going to say 3.5 million for 2013 but if they have the hardware and don't plan on ever being sold out, then they might be able to pull it off. Whats 1.5 million if you're properly watching the hardware WW?

brand power?  $399  > $499  than sony> microsoft.  price is low enough for tax time

So I guess brand power and titles didn't help Sony eventually outsell Microsoft in seventh year sales (from launch to the present opposed to Microsofts launch to one year ago) but also in overall sales.

what does brand power have to do with it?  when did sony brand ever had a meltdown as oppose to microsoft which is the american company foreignors love to hate?  you would swear that outside of america and uk microsoft was outselling ps3 for 7 years then all of a sudden the momentum shifted.  you know thats a total joke to even think ps3 outselling the 360 is a big deal same will be ps4 outselling the x1.  it's not a victory that deserves a happy dance.

Wii-u never had CLOSE to 1 million pre-orders, sony is well above 1, and will get over 2 million in pre-orders alone..............No one in the industry or anywhere is predicting that low a number. The wii-u sold 400,000 it's first wekk, never had close to that many pre-orders............Facts help.

There are also a lot mroe then 2 retail games for ps4. madden, BF4, watch dogs, Drive club, Knack, Killzone.....to name a few. Infamous early 2014. Killer instinct, is hardly a system seller

Least top tier exclusvies? who said? How do you know? You played them? Dead rising is hardly a big franchise, and most poeople only need 1 or 2 games at launch.

Again the only evidence is rpre-ordes, and the Ps4 is lining up the the biggest console launch..ever. You put way too much stock into launch titles...p[eople dont buy consoles just fro launch games that are hit or miss. It is sustained software over years that sells systems. Laucnh titles will be forgotten in a month,.

bolded: sum wii u's fw sales for each region, it's about a million, wich is the same. also, ps4 having 1M+ doesn't mean much since ps3 did it too, and in less time. factor that the 1M + includes japan pre orders, wich are only for 2014. basically, ps4's numbers are being overly glorified.

Having the top games and tech/format and the Sony name itself is what has helped Sony. Third parties and culture of what it means to be a Playstation product. Microsoft is not the product foreigners love to hate, Microsoft is the product people will either find to be valuable or not. If you're imply Japan, you should know by now why Japan ignores them. No point in supporting an outside company when you could support the home brand that does the exact same thing and has been doing it before Microsoft came.

LOL<someone is actually arguing brand power is meaningless? it is everything when selling a product, ask any isheep. Brand recognition and power is one of the most Important/powerfull aspect for any product.

PS3 what? lol

PS4 preorder already topped PS3 sales launch... not only preorder... real SALES.

And PS4 preorders in Japan started two weeks ago... so no.
