The problem with Linux is that they really can't go after the PC gaming market. Even before you get in to lack of software, there is no wide scale driver support like you find on Windows and Mac to the lesser extent. Linux hackers/users have long been known to make their own drivers by using a well documented method of..."Lets write to registry A, and see what happens...".

What Linux based Steambox can do is go after console manufacturers with dedicated accessories, games and such and use an open platform as an incentive...but I am not sure they can compete with the open platform model considering both PS4 and Xbox One are offering indie friendly open platform options.

Don't get me wrong, if Gabe makes a better product, I will use it. But as is, its just been smoke and downright lies on his part (about windows 8)...

Drivers are a mixed bag, NVIDIA makes top notch drivers on par with thier windows ones.  Intel support is vastly improved and should catch up to partiy within a few months.  AMD is a mixed bag, it has been bad but has shown some real improvement  of late, due in no small part to Valve's moves.  The open source drivers for intel are good, those for the other two are less good, but binaries from NVIDIA/AMD are very respectable.

Indie support for linux has been outstanding.  Mainly due to the ease of entry, Unity a while back began supporting linux so for many small developers they just click "make linux version" and get a linux version.  Other game engines are also showing good support, like Crytek (hired a bunch of developers), Torque, Source (obviously) and so on.

Windows 8 and his coments about it are a non issue for me, I don't use windows for work or home, I have not in years. But I can see how his inflamitory remarks may have disturbed windows devotees.  Windows still has the best selection of games and will for some time to come due to that huge back catalogue.

Linux has shown wonderful improvements in driver support and game software, there is no question about it. My issue with Gabe is not tied to this video but is entirely based on the fact he is using unfounded anti Windows FUD to secretly drive his agenda which he never talks about.

He is just worried that Microsoft is going to eat his lunch on the PC with a locked game store and ecosystem and that Apple/Android will do the same with mobile and Ouya like devices. If he just stated it like it is (and announced HL3 already) hed get much more respect from me.

I'm so tired of Gabes nonsence about Linux being the future...

He pretty much spent all last and this year taking dumps on Windows 8 primarily because it includes a built-in app store and gaming hub that might threaten his own gaming service.

Well guess what Gabe? Windows 8 games so far have been a joke and you don't have to worry about that...

Gabe does have to worry about Windows 8 being a success though as it has by far outperformed Newell's expectations, with more than 110 million active users now. Also it has outperformed his expectations on his own service - Steam's usage statistics list the 64-bit version of Windows 8 is now the second-most-often-used OS with 14 percent usage share, compared with 2.15 percent for Mac and 0.10 for Linux.

Good luck convincing anyone that 0.1% of your own service's market share is the future Gabe.

to be fair he talks about how Linux is a tiny peice of the market in the video. He also touches on some of the reasons why support isn't there right now. But also touches on the steps that they are taking to make it a more desirable platform for developers and users.

I have my doubts abouit a Linux gaming future, but V alve are clearly commited to giving it a shot. And there  are a lot of very smart people at Valve and the company has a long history of making forward thinking bets that pay off big. So I wouldn't right it off just yet.

Wow, great info.  I know he is always spouting off about going to Linux, but had no idea that the numbers were so low even on steam!

Just click on the OS version to see the Steam usage stats - http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Win 8 combined is almost 15%.

I dont he is talking about PC linux, most likely steambox. Again, gabe newell > your knowledge.

Looking at the quality of your posts and arguments here it's pretty safe to say that:

my knowledge > your knowledge

I'd be glad to take a test to prove it actually.

This is laughable considering you didn;t even to really read what newell said, and jumped on it because he GASP, sadi something against an MS p[roduct.. GAme knowoedge > yours and Mine > yours, considering how you don't even read nor fully understand topics before jumping in.

After watching it, it looks like the Steambox initiative is going to be something to push Linux into the living room. That is what I made out of what Steam is trying to do.

Didnt watch but anyone have any idea when they think this will be out?

Need to see if it is another Linux based solution offered the way Google did with Android:

What's funny is that people using Steam have Windows 8 at a higher rate than the general public.  It was about twice for a while, but not sure right now.  He just doesn't seem to know his audience.  If your customers prefer it, you should probably listen to that.

We already have a Linux gaming console, it's the Roku 3, and it includes motion gaming.  That fact that most people don't know about it, and I have never seen anyone game on it, shows how well it is currently doing. http://www.roku.com/roku-products

I don't see many alternative other than for Steam to make their own console/Linux Steam Box.  If they really want to change the OS game.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I watched this whole video and half of it is interesting (the history of valve and console parts) while the other half I have to wonder if Gabe has lost his mind.

He talks about the fragmentation around mobile, living room and desktop computing because of "closed platform restrictions" and says how Steam big picture and Linux will bring it all together because they are open.

Has Gabe ever used the iOS or windows 8 software development SDK? I would say that he hasn't... Both SDKs are great in terms of cross platform support. Publishing a windows 8 desktop/tablet and Windows phone app is done simultaneously with 95% of the same code. Xbox One is will also most likely use this SDK and share app development...So there Microsoft should have the desktop, mobile and living room computing covered with absolutely no fragmentation and amazing development tools.

Now has Gabe used the Android SDK, a platform that is more or less "open"? I don't think he has because if he has, he would understand how much it sucks to have to develop for an open platform with no standardized hardware and software. Just ask ANY developer that has made quality iOS or windows 8 apps how they feel about Android and its "openness" and which is more fragmented to develop for.

Bottom line: You will get way more fragmentation on an open platform because there is no standardized requirements in terms of hardware and software.

Otherwise I am looking forward to seeing Gabes hardware solution to the PC crisis and the future of gaming.

He was talking about your content following wherever you go. He is saying that once you buy something you should be able to consume it on wharever you want. Hence why on steam you can buy a game once and play the Windows/Mac/Linux version, Portal 2 PS3 came with a PC version etc. Big picture and their efforts to bring PC to the living room is part of that. Naturally there are some UI and technological limitations but the idea is a noble one. Naturally closed platforms prevent thaat as they each have prepriatary store fronts, different certification proccesses etc that locks content into each ecosystem.

Whether that ideal will ever be achivable is another question entirely.
