He pretty much spent all last and this year taking dumps on Windows 8 primarily because it includes a built-in app store and gaming hub that might threaten his own gaming service. Well guess what Gabe? Windows 8 games so far have been a joke and you don't have to worry about that... Gabe does have to worry about Windows 8 being a success though as it has by far outperformed Newell's expectations, with more than 110 million active users now. Also it has outperformed his expectations on his own service - Steam's usage statistics list the 64-bit version of Windows 8 is now the second-most-often-used OS with 14 percent usage share, compared with 2.15 percent for Mac and 0.10 for Linux. Good luck convincing anyone that 0.1% of your own service's market share is the future Gabe. |
to be fair he talks about how Linux is a tiny peice of the market in the video. He also touches on some of the reasons why support isn't there right now. But also touches on the steps that they are taking to make it a more desirable platform for developers and users.
I have my doubts abouit a Linux gaming future, but V alve are clearly commited to giving it a shot. And there are a lot of very smart people at Valve and the company has a long history of making forward thinking bets that pay off big. So I wouldn't right it off just yet.
