It's mentioned in the first few Space Pirate log that thier Zebes base was just recently lost. Heck even mentions it was in orbit of Zebes when the base went BOOM!

Play Other M and skip the garbage that is Metroid 2, not worth it.
Other M isn't garbage, it's just that people were bothered with Samus and you don't have any past connections with her, so you should fare well.
