I'd say Prime 2 is also worth playing even though it's the hardest of the trilogy to get into.
The biggest problems were:
- that players may get lost easily
- dark world could be drab
- could be too difficult
The positives were:
- some of the best boss fights
- best puzzles in the series
- Sanctuary Fortress
Overall Prime 2 was a very satisfying game for me largely due to how challenging it was, plus it also had my favorite suit design (light).
But if someone was only going to play one Metroid game I'd recommend Prime 1 or Super Metroid.
