The DS came out before the PSP... should "GBA to PSP" be considered a real jump? I don't think so.

It goes GB --> Game Gear --> Nomad --> GBC --> GBA --> DS --> PSP --> 3DS --> Vita

I could see one making the comparison of PSP to Vita or DS to 3DS since they're made by the same company. But GBA to PSP makes about as much sense to me as Game Gear to 3DS.

GBC to DS or PSP to Vita was the greatest leap. GBA to PSP is not a generation leap.

DS released ~ 1 month before the PSP.  In terms of console generations, that's a ridiculously small amount of time between releases. 

Would Dreamcast negate any increase we saw from say, N64 -> PS2?  Or PS1 -> GC?

I'm not quite sure I get your point here =/

PSP to vita was a bigger leap than GBA to PSP ? wut ? O_o

That's why I said 3D-focused.  GBA was mostly a 2D system.  With some trickery, it could pull off a quasi-3D perspective, but it was closer to the SNES' Mode 7 capabilities than 'true' 3D.  


Woaw I didn't even know the SNES had 3D games! All of a sudden the leap I imagined from 5th to 6th gen is way less impressive.

It's not about the amount of time, it's about the order of consoles. If you want to ask what the greatest leap was from one generation to the next, that's a different question than from one console to the next.

The problem with measuring the leap between generations is that if you say Gen 6 (GBA) to Gen 7 (PSP) was the greatest leap, you're only looking at one console in the 7th gen. If you're looking at the whole generation, you should take all consoles into account, so it would be the leap from GBA to both DS and PSP.

And if you're looking at one console to the next, PSP was not the next console after the GBA. The two have nothing to do with one another. Nor does the N64 have anything to do with the PS2, nor the PS1 with the GC, and I don't know why you would compare those, either.

Otherwise I would say the upcoming console generation is the greatest leap ever by far because we're going all the way from the Wii to the PS4.

Not if you compare the most powerful system from one generation to the next generation's most powerful system. Was there another system in the same portable generation of the GBA that was more powerful than it? If not, than the comparison to GBA to PSP is valid just as PSP to Vita is valid.  N64 to GCN or Xbox is valid too as is GCN/Xbox to PS3/Xbox360.

Also you wouldnt compare Wii to PS4 but Xbox360/PS3 to PS4 depending on which system you think was more powerful but they seem pretty much the same to me - its obvious that the Wii was the weakest of the three so you wouldnt compare it to the PS4 (assuming the PS4 is the most powerful system).

 

Unless of course the OP was being vague on the topic discussion and should of stated from one system of the same brand/producer to the next.

This would be no more (or less) useful than comparing the least-powerful console between successive generations... in this case, GBA and DS. Which again points to GBA-PSP being an irrelevant comparison without also considering the DS.

Based on release dates I would say the Game Boy to Atari Lynx. As for the GBA and PSP, the PSP came out years after the GBA, whereas the Lynx came out a few months after the Game Boy. Going from B/W to color is one giant jump.

I do kinda see what you mean actually.  I think we both interpreted the OP differently.
