Just play it now. Only the Xen levels are missing and most people think Xen was the worst part of the game.

Black Mesa mod > HL2

How is the progression affected by the lack of those levels?

The Xen levels (missing ones) are at the end. They consisted of annoying platforming sections that nobody liked.

If you play Black Mesa, the game will end when you get teleported to Xen. So the progression will not be affected.

A better question is how is it higher than Reach, a game that was specifically made to be better than it.

But you read that wrong, it's higher than 3 but not 4.

HL1 is better. There are no forced exposition moments where you stand around doing nothing.(except for the intro)


That's right! Those moments felt a bit forced up on HL2.
