It only beat the wii because of the wii shortages.

It only beat the wii because of the wii shortages.
I finally understand that NINTENDO SIXTY FOUUUUUUR video.
Those December sales are crazy.

You can see the Wii U's biggest problem in that very chart. No games (or important games rather) from January to July, a complete 7 months without big tittles is one of the stupidest things Nintendo could have done. And people still questioned the reasons why it isn't selling..
Nintendo and PC gamer

In between Jan and Aug the Wii U had nothing but pikmin at the end to keep sales strong. While the other consoles had tons of support. GC did not do very good without any 1st party either until august.
But with N64: Mario kart 64 and Star fox 64 Did better and it had more 1st party.
Wii: Wii, super paper mario, mario party, pokemon, metroid, more mario. Wii was the strongest and it also had the most 1st party fancy that? and it had shortages....
It appears to me that Nintendo has become to holiday focused. MS and Sony has been doing decently during the holidays so they have taken more mindshare from Nintendo.
That is a train wreck.
I had a feeling the Wii U was going to be this generation's Game Cube, but the sales figures show it's actually doing quite a bit worse.
We'll see how the bump goes after October, but I really have to say with the PS4 and XB1 launching, I'm just not seeing a miraculous recovery.

Always cool to get comparative numbers like this, from NeoGaf, this is the N64 vs. GCN vs. Wii vs. Wii U first year sales in the US market. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=81552721&postcount=105 Aug LTDs (most recent NPD month for Wii U): |
Can you do a similar one for World Wide? Pretty bad number no doubt, but Nintendo can still turn it around. Almost assured it will never be the Wii, but they can still do well.
| Soundwave said: Inflation too. Today those games would be $100+. I paid $79.99 for Star Wars Shadows of the Empire IIRC (don't ask) back during the N64 launch. |
Makes me think how much I owe my parents for buying me that stuff when I was younger even though they were lower middle class... well, that and college. LOL
Yeah I suppose college should rank first on the things I thank them for!
It's funny, I don't think of the Wii U drought as a big deal to me at this stage in my life. But looking back on when I got my SNES, it seemed like an eternity until Zelda 3 was released but it was only until the first summer. And that was despite me having MarioWorld, Castlevania 4, F-Zero, Final Fantasy II and many others to occupy my time. I guess time passed slower and I consumed games quicker back then. Kinda makes it hit home for me just how bad Wii U's software situation is for those who have more time to play than I do. It really needs fresh, non-port content.

It's amazing how well the N64 sold at first, yet the PS1 sold almost twice as much as the N64 in the US.
Cool chart
But one thing I took from this is u cant judge a console by its first year sales. N64 was tracking only 400k behind Wii arlt this point in USA but in the long run only sold about half.
