I think the real story here is that, on a userbase of 66 million, the DS has 39 million-sellers

How many did the GBA and PS2 have at that number?

If there is any justice in this world it will be the new Advance Wars which will mysteriously sell a million copies next week. The game series deserves much higher sales than it gets.
