Forums - Sports Discussion - Tokyo will host Olympic Games in 2020

Tagged games:

Japan had the Olympics in 1998 (Winter games) so it's not like they don't have a relatively recent benchmark. No one is going to outspend the Chinese opening ceremony, that was more of a show-off ceremony to cement their rising on the world stage and the cost for it was absurd.

Syndy (2000) and the UK (2012) had very nice ceremonies without having to break the bank.

So glad Tokyo got it. Madrid wouldn't be able to afford it and Istanbul shouldn't have it as long as Ergodan is in power. So many problems in Turkey, those park protests are only a small part of the problems.

I just wish people would stop going on about the nuclear problem, that only affected Tokyo with power cuts not radiation. Fukushima is no where near Tokyo.

I want an olympics in Africa but most of it is still too underdeveloped to be able to afford it. Suprising that Brazil could afford it

South Africa could probably do as good a job as the Chinese did, or the Brazilians can do.

Radiation from Fukushima is showing up on the Canadian and California coast lines, there's no way it's not impacting Japan as a whole as much as the government is trying to down play it.

My guess is there will be a rise in cancer cases in Japan in the coming years/decades.

South Africa isn't much better off than the rest of Africa, they still have tons of poverty among the black population thanks to Apartheid. And not only that but i'm not sure if they could pull it off very well, with how corrupt their government is

What kind of radiation is it to start with? Because that affects how long it lasts for.

Whatever type of radiation the 2 nuclear bombs were when they dropped in 1945 didn't seem to last long as both Hiroshima and Nagosaki seemed to have both recovered quite well. It must be safe there if all those people live in these 2 cities today.

But yeah i have no idea how a nuclear disaster affects the water

And Brazil and China don't have tons of poverty and corruption? You don't need to be rich to run the olympics, you just need to be relatively stable and able to host the events as planned.
