I think they understand that 20 plus million people are going to be watching the game tonight while this ad runs on TV.

I think this demonstrates my point, which you clearly didn't get.

Then add the fact that no games were shown...and you see the overlap diminish.

ok let's figure this out.  nfl fans are mostly men.  men watch tv and play games with their bros.   men have wives.  men have kids.  men also have the money.

fact is the whole blue group is adressed and could be converted into red this fig is not telling the whole story at all

Addressed, yes.

Converted, absolutely not. No NFL fan who isn't also a gamer is going to drop $500 on this thing. I can't believe you're even suggest it. That's quite the delusive thought process.

I always love statements like this that assumes it knows a market with no data.  This is the part you do not get.  Because the machine is a media entertainment device, it fits all the little spots for a consumer who is looking for something that does MORE than games but can also serve up content, run their fantasy league and snap between content including making 1080P video calls to your brother while you watch the game together.

So I will agree that no average NFL TV watcher will pay 500 bones for just a game machine but they sure probably would pay 500 bones for a media entertainment device that serves up all their content and allow them to do multiple things at the same time while socializing with their family who do not live in the same area or state.

The Xbox has always been the official console of the NFL since the 360. MS has paid the NFL big time.

very smart advertisement for the people they are shooting for

whom is that?  the nfl fan that is watching an nfl game but really wishes they had a way to watch the game they are already watching?    that guy that wants to watch football but is desperate to have the game interupted by video chat calls?  the dude that thinks the already persistant onscreen game stat updates isn't enough and want to dedicate even more screen space to games other than the one they wanted to watch?

Obviously you do not like or feel the need for these features, nor do I in fact but that doesn't mean other people might not.

I watch the NFL pretty regularly but I don't do the fantasy stuff or watch multiple games at the same time and it's not that big a deal for me if I miss a week etc., but there are a LOT of very big NFL fans that pay hundreds of extra dollars on their already heavy cable or satellite bills to be able to watch every game just so they can study the games for their fantasy leagues, etc. Some of those same people might find the motion and voice controls cool and these people also include a large group of people that have large amounts of dispossable income (or credit) that overpay for TVs, audio/video systems, etc. and there's a chance if they like these features Microsoft might be able to intice them into dropping $500 just for these features - and heck just putting the advertisement out has got people like us talking about the XB1 again and that just translates to more knowledge of the subject matter for more people (the main point of advertising I believe).

I don't understand why people can't understand this but not everything is necessarily directed at you.

Someone who wants:

NFL FF league integration
Complete customizable player tracking for those in non-NFL.com leagues
Customized highlights
Complete stats/updates on demand right on the TV
The ability to Skype a friend and talk about the game right there

All without needing to hold or grab a second device or change the channel or divert your attention away from the screen. Basically a fantasy football or NFL fanatics dream.

I mean yikes, channels do this "persistant onscreen game stat updates" for a reason. NFL Redzone has become insanely popular for a reason. People want this. The NFL app on Xbone is going to be used a ton.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

After reading the comments on this thread, i am a little amazed. I get how we can all have different interests. But, not getting the value of targeted advertising is a little disappointing.
Let's just assume that 20 million people actually watch the game and the same 20 million aren't in the kitchen or bathroom during the commercial. If you can have those 20 million people GAIN AWARENESS of your product existing through this ad, it would be a complete home run. The goal is to connect the viewers obvious interest in the NFL to the XB1 brand. They know they aren't getting them to play games and they don't care about that for this ad. All they really want is NFL + XB1 = COOL/GREAT/NEAT/whatever. The commercial isn't a one time thing, it will be on multiple times each game over hundreds of games(if you watch football, you know this). Now, after that thought is established, the other advertising they do that will demonstrate other abilities of the XB1 will only compound with this ad to give them reasons to buy the XB1.

The other way to look at it is, if the NFL audience is later at walmart/bestbuy/target/gamestop and are considering buying a game system for themselves or the family, they now have another reason to choose the XB1 over the other options.

There is more to the market than people who watch the NFL and play video games. Are you forgetting about parents who may be buying their kids a video game system for the holiday season? Now a parent can look at the XboxOne and see that it has uses for both the children and themselves and feel more inclined to purchase it over the PS4.

Were they supposed to show a picture of Forza 5 at the end to make it a better ad?

That's a pretty catchy commercial. It's upbeat and modern like the Surface commercials. Makes me wish I had friends to show it off to.

A lot of salty people in this thread.

NFL is a religion in the USA. The NFL/fantasy football integration stuff is smart on MS' part.
