I just realized that Time Travelers sold 90k copies across three platforms (retail). Quite a flop for Level-5.
Bestselling PSV title in Japan (retail): 270k...
1st party game sales also mostly disappointing.

Mindshare at stores is severely lacking. There just isn't the bulk of games that are available on the 3DS. Going into a game store here in Japan and the 3DS has yards of shelf space (say 2 shelving units with 6 shelves each) whereas the PSV might have one or two shelves on one shelving unit shared with another system.
Of course, the 3DS also has access to the DS library, which is MASSIVE in Japan.
It needs AAA exclusive games that you can't find anywhere else. That list would be far less than 100. To be fair though I really doubt even that would help because in my opinion the market for dedicated gaming handhelds has been severely eroded by iPhones/iPads/etc and much of what's left is firmly in the grasp of Nintendo,
I think Sony should just go ahead and be more forceful with attacking the competition in their ads. Launch a new ad campaign, not aimed at the hardcore but aimed at the tablet consumer. MS is trying it with their anti-iPad commercials, Sony could do it with the Vita. Aim for parents who are looking to buy their kid something that will take up their time. Kids end up with tablets because that's what is in, there are apps, games, its considered an all in one device. The Vita is too and the consumer doesn't know, but the Vita can do more in terms of games. Make it a who has the better device. Everyone is playing these small throw away social games, show Vita has mutliplayer, ad hoc stuff. What kid isn't going to want to be able to play games with their siblings and friends just by proximity. The parents need to know that. The new price for the Vita is going to help get this message across as plenty of tablets are pricey too. The Vita so far has been marketed highly to the informed consumer that already plays a lot of games. They either already have a Vita or already have a hefty stable of games. They need to attack the tablet market and hard.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
