Forums - Gaming - Missing Next Gen Feature?

I want family sharing of games, like what Microsoft was discussing before the 180 (though obviously now it would only be for digital games, which is fine, since I plan on getting most or all digital now). Being able to share digital games with people all across the globe would be huge. Let players have access to the entirety of the game, no time limits; the only restriction being an internet connection, since they wouldn't have a disc. If folks in the game industry are serious about going all-digital in the future, this or something like this needs to be implemented.

I agree with the complexity, but emulation programs can be written for anything if they want.  My guess is that they "don't want" based on the return(0$) they get for it.  If they charged for the emulator to recover costs, people would call them greedy bastards.

Yes and no, you can write emulation programs for just about anything, but another important thing is speed.  If you can only run the game at 3 frames per second, it becomes a gigantic problem.  At that point it might as well be a slide show.(Then again someone said 30 fps was a slide show...)

So yes, we'd probably be able to have emulators, but they wouldn't be able to run well.

That's kinda my point, if these new systems are "so powerful" they should be able to run the emulators at 30fps.

PCs are "so powerful" too. Yet a PS3 emulator, if it existed, wouldn't run decently on just about any kind of PC you can build right now.

My PC is a lot more powerful than a Wii (it's more powerful than a PS3). Yet not many games can run decently on it using Dolphin. Although you can get a more recent build that will run those games fairly well (except for most Metroid Prime games, for some reason), the point still stand that just because the specs are higher doesn't mean it can emulate those consoles as if it was a walk in a park.

Emulators demand a lot of CPU power to run. And since the architecture of the Power PC processors are different from the x86, it's really demanding on any machine to run those emulators with decent performance.

That doesn't make those PCs and the Next gen consoles not "so powerful".  You just don't understand what you're asking of them.

That could be true, but again, there is a cost to it that makes it not worth it.  A 3rd party would get sued by Sony/M$, so why do it.  Even if they had to add a few parts to assist in emulation, it couldn't cost much if planned for(launch PS3).  I am not an expert, but it would be a neat feature for sure.

What is stupid is that the XBOne and PS4 are supposed to be so powerful, why can't they write a simple emulation app that can run on these "powerhouse" systems.  It shouldn't bog them down, they just don't want to quit selling the PS360s yet.

So the ever so powerful PS4One can't be BC but the supposedly "Wiik U" can XD

Well the WiiU is emulating Wii games, which is a rather simple task compared to the emulation of a HD game, so i'm not sure I get your point :P

On topic though, I'd love for backwards compatibility. That'd be an amazing feature to have.
Other than that though... I can't think of anything right now.

Can't believe that I didn't think of this before.  This has got to be the number one feature for gamers, but obviously not for console manufacturers.

Supposedly too expensive.  They would have to have the (Xbox 360/PS3) in the system to be able to play the games for it, otherwise emulation would be very slow. PS2 emulation and PS1 emulation should be possible, but Xbox original emulation is not.

exactly. and i can name a lot of features that the PS4 can do that the ever so great WiiU cant.

More power to you then.

For fuck's sake. I can't make a joke without all of you guys getting so defensive.

My ideal, although unrealistic features that are missing from Xbox One and PS4...

Backwards compatibility
Flash Storage
Terabyte of storage
Functions as DVR (like Tivo) Xbox One came close, but you still need a separate receiver/dvr
Free online
Digital versions of games to be cheaper than physical (might happen)
