Forums - Sony - Official Killzone Mercenary Review Thread! 76 Metacritic!

By the way, not sure what all the other reviewers said since I usually just go with pocketgamer, but did the other reviewers mention how the game is ~5 hours, but that is entirely dependant on your play style?

For example, they say the game is about 5 hours long, but if you play more stealth and not run n' gun then the game lasts much longer. Not just that, but if you decide to replay any of the missions from the campaign it changes the objectives so your next playthrough is different.

Man, if this was an iOS game it would be at an average of at least 95 right now, lol.

Decided to check meta for the hell of it.

As usual, another Vita game where the reviews (mainly the low scoring ones) spend so much time tearing it apart for not living up to the console versions.

Uh, this is a handheld. Just like how iOS games get scored higher due to being on iOS this should get treatment different from that of a console.

Either way, no big deal. Well, expect for the fact that reviewers continue to make this stupid mistake of claiming games have these short lengths, meanwhile your average person does not rush through a playthrough like a reviewer does.

They need to begin putting these things into proper perspective.

That reviewer seems to get it.

"Killzone: Mercenary is an enjoyable shooter, with an excellent online mode and a solid - if not completely predictable - single-player campaign. It looks outstanding on the Vita, and finally gives the little console the shooter it has been crying out for."

Also says this:

Killzone: Mercenary is the best first-person shooter on the Vita, even though that's not saying much. It feels great, looks outstanding, and has a hugely addictive online multiplayer mode

The guys over at Pocketgamer are great. If a handheld title is known to require multiple days or weeks to get the full experience they do reviews in that manner. For most games they do a 7 day review system. They give an initial impression on day 1, then come back and update the article on Day 3 with the experience at that point and how the fun factor holds up, then they give a final impression after 7 days.

They are awesome. You should check them out on a regular basis, lol.

Another little fact about PG is that the comments sections are almost 100% void of stupidity. People give reasonable opinions on the articles and the reviewers themselves respond in a very professional manner.

I know of some sites that could learn a thing or two from them.

choppy framerate? campaign 4-5 hours? uh, what? I had no issues with framerate ever, and I'd say the campaign is closer to 7-8 hours, so about what you'd expect from an FPS.

What campaign did you play without a choppy framerate? The framerate goes to hell in the campaign whenever you have more than 3 enemies on screen firing, which is 90% of the time. Granted the multiplayer runs silky smooth.

I played the singleplayer campaign, because, you know...only campaign in the game.  I was paying special attention and the framerate never once dipped, not even when fighting dozens of enemies then getting on a ship to show the entire level at once, like when the airship was crashing.  Impressive performance from beginning to end.

I can say that if you play  it right, it's about 7-8 hours long (a mix of run n gun and stealth).  I love playing stealth, and that's how I preferred to enjoy it.  Plus, there's the four different ways to do every mission contract, so it's not like it's SHORT or lacking in content.

I stand by my score and rationale behind it.  It's a worthy game that is just as good and in some ways better than the console versions, all for a 'discounted' 40 bucks instead of 60.  I do not understand why so many people are saying it doesn't live up to the console versions.

OP updated. Will keep adding review scores soon.

I changed my connection type to Always Ask from Always Connected. Framerate improved drastically. When I first played it my net was congested. There may have been a correlation there with all the constant sudden drops and stutters. So yeah, now it's even more impressive than before.

I don't think I'll buy this game. Economy is too shitty for me and I need the money. Was gonna consider/do it if it got better reviews :> Call me schtupid if ye wantz!

The campaign being 4-5 hours saddens me and I get that you go through the same thing to unlock other stuff.. but neh, Ill wait for Shadowfall which is very close anyway.

Check the reviews content and not the score. You will see how broken some of them are

Capmaign length depends entirely on you. Imagine a speed run on a COD campaign for example. This game is built around different approaches/play styles and has collectibles that you can find.

Not saying you should buy it as that's your money your business. But don't make the mistake of hanging on to review scores when it comes to vita games.

you shouldn't mention pocket gamer so much or the stupidity of some people will also reach this site anytime soon

I don't usually quibble over reviews that much but, I've got to say, I find some of these reviews annoying. Not because they didn't like it but rather because some of them seemed to not want to be playing on a handheld. It's stupid. Imagine if every console FPS would have "this would be better with a keyboard and mouse" written every few paragraphs. It might be true but it has no bearing on the game in question.

The Eurogamer review, for instance. It was all "home console FPS games" this and "home console FPS games" that. Can't they get someone to do handheld reviews who actually wants to play a handheld?

I've said it many times before but handheld meta scores in the west are always going to be behind where they should be for many types of games simply because some of the reviews start with an automatic bias.
