"Don't blame consolidation. Blame Sony and Microsoft for jumping the budgets up to $30 million for a console game. That's not consolidation's fault."

 

I do not agree that its them thats killing inovation, but i think they may be part of the problem. Creating a good game that sells well on their machines needs a lot  investment put in, which could be like 20mil + including advertising. What do you guys think.

Yeah, no wonder the guy said he, he's the VP of EA Mobile. lol

we all know Mobile games are on the edge of innovation. ;)

I don't agree. PSN and Arcade gives plenty of room for innovative titles and so does Wii, DS and PC.

Personally I think Microsoft have innovated. I have a wii and obviously Nunchuck is awesome, but achievements in games is a massive thing for me. I now probably always get my complete moneys worth through trying to achieve them. Great gameing invention. I find it hard to play a game without them. Also live has evolved so much I'd certainly have this service over Bluray. (I dont buy a single film or song from a shop). 1500GB between 2 hard drives on my pc. Any film in hd then media centre through to my 360. Thats definately innovation. Well for adults at least.

of course no, innovation costs money, that's why big companies are on the cutting edge of innovation, Microsoft, Apple... so on, you don't see a company of 5 people come up with a new product nowaday, do you?

as for big budge production, you see this at hollywood all the time, Big-production might not always translate into great result, but at least they have the resources to bring in the best of the best. Sure some will fail (Lair), but more will win (CoD4, FFXII, Halo3, AC....)

if the guy's so bitter, go make a cutting edge game with small budge them. You don't think companies want that? It's just highly undoable.

But then again, the guy works for bloody Mobile games, what right does he have to do to criticize console games?

On one point, yes the fact that you are forced to put in so much money to make AAA title on the HD consoles is really a bad thing. On the flip side, the power of the machines does give you the ability to push AI and graphics to pretty amazing levels if done right.

In the end I still prefer Nintendo's approach.
