Forums - Microsoft - What if.... Microsoft dropped their price at launch to $399?

It would be more tempting, obviously, but I'd probably still go with the PS4. I just have very little interest in Kinect, so it would be more like they're even in terms of value, though I'm more partial to World Wide Studios.

Also, the PS4 route would make more sense for me personally, as PS+ works for it as well as my Vita and PS3.

Well, I have a gaming PC already for multiplats so it would have to have exclusives that justify a $400 purchase. I can't see that happening for many years down the line for me personally. Also I hate Kinect with a bit of an irrational passion.

I'm affraid they would have to drop the two AA batteries to reach this price...

No matter the price, XO still won't be available in my country for a year or year and a half, so this wouldn't change a thing. PS4 + Wii U all the way in the next gen.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

After Microsoft has done so many 180's in the last 2 months, I am not sure anyone really knows which direction they face now.  Let's say they did one more that would actually bring some real value to the gamers right away.  If they dropped their price on the XBOX ONE on launch day to $399 would you change your mind if you hadn't planned to get one before?  It would still come with Kinect 2.0(not even required to plug in any longer) and everything as seen in the "unboxing" video by Major Nelson.

A poll on this is too easy, I am more interested  to hear from people who really had decided to pass on the XBOX ONE after the reveal at E3 .  After all the changes(180's) and this IMAGINARY price drop.  What would still hold you back?

So they take an even larger hit on their bottom line? That would not be a sound business practice AKA they'd be pulling a SONY.

Would I possibly buy one? It'd register on my radar better but here are some facts as to why I can't get excited about the X180.

1) It has a Kinect. Fact is I don't like kinect style games or really any of the kinect features. I don't want to get up and move around, dance around, or otherwise gyrate my body for any reason whatsoever. I do not want to talk to my console to make it do shit either.

2) As an RPG gamer the XBOX brand has been an utter failure. This is a Japanese related issue where MS just can not seem to get traction. Their WRPG offering has been ok but for the most part the Playstation brand has been able to keep up there as well. There just are not enough exclusive WRPG games for XBOX consoles to justify giving up on JRPG games.

3) Despite the number of 180s they've pulled they've already given me doubts. How long before they weedle some of these features back in? Maybe not the current gen, but what about next gen?

1. As far as Kinect goes, if Microsoft doesn't require you to hook it up and they seemingly(Imaginary price drop) aren't charging you for it, wouldn't you just leave it in the box or test it true durabilty from 3 flights up?  So, you just ignore it.

2.  For the RPG aspect, unfortunately there is no answer...

3.  Again, you speak the truth!  Only, i think we will see most(besides online check in for disc based games)of it in some way with 18 months of launch.

It's pointless from business point of view. Even if it was $600 at launch. It would have sold out most of its units. They are trying to find it hard to meet demand at the current price. So why should they lose $100 more on each console sold just to appease the forum dwellers.

Price cut should happen when and if the sales drop. It would be better for them to save that for next fall along with the launch of Halo 5.

Just my 25 cents.

It's not pointless. Launching with a ridiculous price tag and then dropping the price in Q1 2014 has more negative aspects than positive ones. Not only does it generate bad press ("X1 not selling, hence price drop."), but early adopters also need to be compensated for having paid more just a couple of months earlier, offsetting those additional $100 that were charged at launch for the most part. Taking the hit upfront would actually be a better decision, because at $500 it's inevitable that the X1 will struggle badly. No console has ever done well at $500+ and the X1 certainly won't be the first one to defy that trend.

Next fall (Q42014) for price drop Rol not Q1. Fair points though. I still stick to the notion that people who buy consoles in the first year or so are less sensitive to the price. It sure would be an incentive for people to switch to X1 earlier and buy the yearly franchises there instead of 360.

So far these responses are not surprising and are more evidence that MS shouldn't overreact to internet complaints. A lot of them aren't your customers.

It would come down to exclusives at this point. Of the big three they are the weakest at this, but they have Halo, so thats the great equalizer. That and they will pay a third party to keep a hit game away from Sony like Gears. Its looking like Titan Fall will be that game.

You are incorrect actually

If Microsoft invests 400 million in a American Football partnership, More than 100 million for the controller and around 300 million dollars for the console+kinect not counting in the exclusive deals and first party investment then they want to get their money back. I think they'll get a bad release, much worse than ps3, especially at this pricepoint. Perhaps 399 can change it however it won't really influence the launch I think. More the long run. Microsoft has a big buffer as a company.
