So the other two main console iteriations of the series sold 5.85mill for KH and 4.07mill for KH2. I don't think the handheld games (they are not spinoffs -.-) represent how the series is doing because lets be honest, numbered entries in a series tend to sell way better, its just the way it is. Also those games were on different consoles from what the main games were on.
Now Tetsuya has said the production values for KH3 will rival FF15 and that scares me a little because I don't think the game will pull anywhere near the numbers it got with the first 2 games and SE might drop the series to handhelds only when they make a loss on the game. I expect it to sell maybe 2-3mill lifetime sales, considering this is only coming out on next gen consoles and will be out in 2015 when the install base will still be rather small (If you want to know why I'm so sure about 2015 - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=163903).
Also its well known that the story in KH games is hard to follow unless you end up playing all the games in the series, every game (except re:coded) adds a huge portion to the overall story and if you miss one then your screwed. Now the HD collections do give people the chance to get all caught up with the story, but lets be honest HD collections don't tend to sell very well. At this point its basically the people that are already KH fans will buy KH3, there will be some new people, but that number will be very low. Since its been so long since the last console release I think a large portion of the fans either gave up on the series, don't play video games anymore, or grew out of the series (that's not how I think, but some people do). So you basically take the number from the last console release, 4.07mill, subtract all the gamers that I listed and add the small number of people coming into the series.
I think 2-3mill sales sounds about right, what do you guys think?
