I would say 3DS. You have things like Tales for a lengthy story, but Mario Kart for quick fire fun.

Well i have just started it, although i'm thinking off switching to zelda

I have had it for over a year, and yet to open nor play it, and i have yet to play the original on the n64, which is strange because i grew up with that system aha

Looking by the amount of games you can go no wrong either way, so choose the one with a game you want to play the most or get the Vita, since it's more comfortable to hold for longer.

PS Vita games look more appealing to play. (Personally for me that is)

Are we talking about Tales here? It is a damn good game and perfect for a long journey. 

In addition, I should add I had a 5 hour trip with my Vita, and found myself tired of it after an hour. I'd already played through the games, and nothing drew me back in. That's where something like Mario Kart, and even Mario and Zelda, shine. Portable Nintendo games just have far more replay ability and a factor that keeps you interested when needed.

And don't even get me started on Pokemon!
