I really don't understand the blind support for Nintendo, especially after the Wii. So, Nintendo's success only brought about shovelware, casual party games, and an archaic online infrastructure. Yet this somehow is all excused because "haha they make more money than Sony!" Has anyone ever truly put this into perspective? Think about it: the Wii made Nintendo lots of money, and they choose to invest this on a console, whose power is only comparable to 7th gen hardware, still has outdated online support, and has one of the worst gamepads a console has ever seen. This is more than good enough for Nintendo fans? It pleases you to know that your favorite company opts to reserve its profits and doesn't even try to take some risk financially for the betterment of console gaming?

Contrast this with Sony's losses and what they took to showing everyone with PS4: a console more developer friendly, an improved UI, OS (which helps with things like browsing the PS Store), loads of power that is comparable to SOME high end PCs. So the PS4 isn't worth owning in spite of this because Sony doesn't make enough money for you? Why is this talking point used so much by Nintendo fans? Because arguing sales in units is obviously going to become a losing proposition for them. It's a sad and pathetic strawman argument. And trying to draw parallels with SEGA's financials, really? Talk about desperate here.

So much irony in this post.

Because ps1/2 didn't have shovelware. And blind support, you wouldn't know anything about that obviously.

Is that the conclusion you take from his post? Irony? Hasn't the Wii casual party games as a significant part of its catalogue? Is that irnory? Hasn't the Wii a poor online infrastructure? Would that be irony too? Haven't Nintendo profits during this 7th gen been higher than any others, even considering the entire videogaming history? Aren't WiiU's core capabilities comparable to 7th gen rather than 8th gen? Hasn't the WiiU outdated online support? I guess this is all irony. Maybe WiiU's gamepad is one of the best, if all of that was irony. Is he being ironic when saying Nintendo opts to reserve its profits and doesn't even try to take some risk financially for the betterment of console gaming?

"So much irony" that the only thing you point out is the shovelware, which is also present in PS1 and PS2. But is it about the same? I mean, a console maker can't do much about 3rd parties doing shovelware and thus shouldn't be blamed for that. But in the specific case of Wii, Nintendo has inspired them with low-budget games that sold extremely well. Wii Sports is an example, there were a lot of "me too"s that sold some hundreds of thousands or even millions. Wii Fit is another example, there were a lot of fitness games that sold some millions. All of this was shovelware. Also, 3rd parties realized that launching top quality games on the Wii was a hell of a risk whereas shovelware had a lot of potential, so they started to innovate in that field (beyond Nintendo's creations). I'm sure you can't find on PS1/PS2 shovelware that sold 39M. On Wii you can, look at Just Dance.

I'm sure none of this is new to you. You must know very well the difference between PS2 and Wii regarding shovelware.

Regarding the topics you have ignored, you denial won't change the fact that they clearly show what does Nintendo with the gamer's money in comparison to Sony.

Great stuff Mummelmann, solid from top to bottom for the most part. There are things I don't agree with in both yours and John Lucas' posts, but as far as general outlook on the videogame market I'm probably not very far from how you see things. The main differences probably revolve around the marketability of the Wii U and the status of the 'less enthusiastic' gamers to not use one of the non-words of the discussion.

One thing I thought I could help clear up though. The ethics discussion concerning advertising targeted at children is probably not going to go anywhere. There's a cultural gap there that is obvious in how you both approach the subject. In Norway advertising targeted at children is illegal, in the US it is a non topic and not even slightly controversial. From the US vantage, discussing the ethics of advertising aimed at kids makes about as much sense as discussing the ethics of what kind of bread you prefer.

For example, both Microsoft and Sony also target kids heavily in the US with their ads, if not necessarily their videogame ads.

Yeah I've seen tons of LBP ads around the block

Ah, another kool aid drinker. The only difference between the different shovelware on ps2 and Wii was one had a company name on the box you support and another didn't. I ignored most of the other post and most of yours because you run off on tangents of irrelevancy.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

The issue with Nintendo's advertising isn't that it's unethical, it's that reinforces the image that the WiiU is a "kiddie console". Nintendo's had this problem ever since they designed the Gamecube to look like a purple lunchbox.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

For now.

They should switch their advertising right when Mario Kart comes out

If they're smart you'll be right. The Wii advertising was genius, they were targeting whole families, not just their kids. If Nintendo hasn't learned anything than the Mario Kart commercials will just be a bunch of kids playing Mario Kart.

You made 3 sentences and I couldn't understand a single one...Can you please elaborate what you're trying to say?
